POSITION: INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT - SPECIAL EDUCATION
Location: Positions available at Elementary, Middle, and High Schools
Reports To: Special Education Teacher and/or Building Principal
Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Length: 7.5 hours/day | 186 days
Salary Schedule/Grade: Classified Pay Scale, Grade 4
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
JOB SUMMARY:
Manassas Park City Schools are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Instructional Assistant – Special Education to support the academic and social-emotional growth of students with special needs. Under the direction of a certified special education teacher, the instructional assistant will help implement instructional plans, monitor student progress, and foster an inclusive, supportive learning environment. This position plays a vital role in ensuring students receive the individualized support they need to thrive.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must obtain a qualifying score on the ParaPro Assessment upon hire.
- Previous experience working with children or students is preferred.
- Ability to work effectively with students of varying ability levels.
- Ability to follow written and oral directions in carrying out instructional and behavioral support plans.
- Strong interpersonal skills for collaborating with students, teachers, parents, and school staff.
- Organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:(including but not limited to the following)
- Support the instructional and behavioral goals outlined by the certified special education teacher and student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Assist individuals or small groups of students with academic instruction in subjects such as reading, math, science, writing, and daily living skills.
- Implement behavior intervention plans and strategies developed by the IEP team.
- Monitor students in a variety of settings, including the classroom, lunchroom, playground, and life enrichment activities.
- Provide clerical support to the teacher, such as organizing instructional materials, maintaining student records, and preparing resources.
- Supervise students when the teacher is temporarily unavailable.
- Assist with classroom management to ensure a positive, safe learning environment.
- Support students’ engagement and independence during learning activities.
- Attend required in-service trainings and workshops to support professional growth.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support student success and efficient school operations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The position requires the ability to:
- Communicate effectively through phone and in-person interactions.
- Operate office equipment including computers, copiers, calculators, etc.
- Perform physical activities such as climbing, standing, walking, lifting, reaching, and bending.
EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:
- Successful completion of a Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
- Negative Tuberculosis (TB) Screening.
