General Information

Work Location: Palmetto Adoptions, 305 25th Street West, Palmetto, Florida 34221
Work Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, weekends and emergency work is required

Expected Starting Salary Range: $58,141.44 - $75,583.87

Supervises daily operations of the Manatee County Animal Welfare animal shelter to ensure the humane and proper care of animals in the shelter. Responsible for the disposition of all animals in the shelter according to ordinance, policy, or procedure.

Working Conditions:
Indoor/Outdoor situation, varying weather conditions, including inclement. High noise environment while performing certain duties. Capture, restrain, handle, and lift animals, alive or dead, up to 100 pounds with assistance. Regularly required to drive County vehicles as part of the duties of the job. Regularly required to work other than normal business hours.

Job Description

Essential Functions:
These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.

Supervises daily operations of the animal shelter to ensure the humane and proper care of animals in the shelter. Assigns work and delegates responsibilities to staff and monitors' progress. Assigned shelter staff may include other than regular employees, such as temporary OPS, On-Call OPS, and volunteers.

Assists with other personnel activities of staff, such as hiring, training, performance appraisals, disciplinary matters, rewarding, and motivating. Cultivates strong working relationships and builds trust among team members.

Oversee animal care volunteers to ensure all safety procedures and behavior modification plans are being followed.

Participate in dog play group activities.

Strong understanding of basic animal medical and behavioral needs.

Responsible for ensuring all medical and behavioral needs of the animals are being addressed and met.

Provides counsel and education to the public and adopters regarding training, placement, and care of animals. Ensures safe interactions between the public and shelter animals.

Assist with Animal Care Specialist duties when needed.

Performs daily rounds and inspections of the facility to ensure all animals are receiving the care they need, and staff and volunteers are following policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Ensures shelter and other work areas are maintained in an organized and clean manner.

Completes administrative tasks, adoption inquiries, adoption processing and adoption follow-up. Prepares and maintains reports and records as assigned.

Assists with the development and maintenance of training and operational procedure manuals for the Animal Welfare Division.

Works emergency situations (including weather and other extreme conditions) as required, including work in the Emergency Operations Center and pet-friendly shelters.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Two (2) or more years of progressively responsible experience in a small animal (dog and cat) related position. Previous supervisory experience desired.

Valid driver's license with valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Good organization, prioritization, analytical, and problem-solving skills to effectively supervise area of responsibility and attain goals set. Able to resolve difficult problems and situations.

Good knowledge and understanding of practices, policies, and procedures pertaining to the operation of an Animal Services Facility or small animal shelter/kennel environment.

Good knowledge and understanding of practices and procedures in the safe handling of all types of animals under varying conditions.

Good knowledge and understanding of animal health problems and basic veterinary functions.

Good knowledge and understanding of regulatory compliance necessary to successfully perform job responsibilities.

Good knowledge and understanding of all County computer systems and software applications required to perform job duties.

Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills to interact professionally and effectively with staff, volunteers, and the general public. Able to communicate policies, practices, and procedures for clarity and understanding by direct reports and other stakeholders.
