Work Location : Central Library, 1301 Barcarrota Boulevard West, Bradenton, Florida 34205
Work Hours : Monday - Saturday, 40 hours per week with variable daytime, evening, and weekend hours.
Performs a variety of technical and professional duties for the Manatee County Public Library System. Provides reference, biographical, and readers’ advisory services to the general public. Performs circulation and cataloging tasks. Assists with adult and juvenile library programming. Educates patrons in the use of library services, resources, and technology.
Working Conditions : Indoor library environment. Extended periods of sitting and standing regularly required. High noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment and books up to 25 lbs. alone; up to 50 lbs. with assistance. Able to push book truck and shelve books. May be assigned to any Manatee County Public Library System location. Assigned schedule will include Saturday and evening hours.
Essential Functions :

- Provides reference, bibliographical, and readers’ advisory services to the general public. Helps library patrons locate reference and leisure reading materials and conduct research. Develops pathfinders, bookmarks, reading lists, brochures, booklets, and newsletters.
- Assists and instructs patrons in the use of library services, resources, and technology. Educates patrons on how to properly search for information using library databases. May teach or assist with classes about information resources and computer instruction.
- Assists with adult and juvenile library programming, both on-premise and in the community. Plans informational and recreational programs for diverse audiences.
- Interprets and enforces relevant Library and County policies and procedures to the public. Refers escalated situations to higher level staff as appropriate. Recommends policy changes to immediate supervisor or library administration.
- Participates in collection management routines. Catalogues, classifies, circulates, and maintains library resources and materials. May set up or work with databases and information systems to catalogue and access information.
- May act as library liaison, representing the library at county and community meetings and participating in community outreach events.
- Assists in training and coordinating work of library volunteers. May act as a mentor to library interns.
- Maintains current knowledge of professional library issues, developments, materials, and equipment with emphasis on current and future trends in technology and literacy. Also maintains current knowledge of specific area of assignment. Attends training and meetings and participates in professional library organizations.
Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.
Position Title : Information Services Librarian I, position M1634, January 2025
Works in the Information Services section at Central Library. Maintains awareness of library service trends and information sources, with emphasis on reference, business, workforce development, and historical preservation. Provides excellent customer service at information desks, by phone, via the virtual reference service Ask a Librarian, and in the Archive Lab. Assists in historical and information programming, reference and database support, historical research on behalf of County departments, outreach, displays, and emergency operations duties as assigned. Assists with management of the Eaton Room local history archive and accompanying digital archive; includes digitizing local historical materials using photo scanners, book and map scanners, and audiovisual converters. Recruits and manages digitization volunteers. Collaborates with community members, organizations, and museums.
Qualifications :
Master’s degree in library and information science from an accredited graduate program, or bachelor’s degree and enrolled in an accredited MLS / MLIS program with the ability to obtain an MLS / MLIS within twelve (12) months of hire. Valid driver license required, with valid Florida driver license required within 30 days of hire. Prior library work experience desired.
