Your internship will include impactful hands-on work within a county department, networking, professional development, and building lasting connections with other interns, mentors, and Manatee County team members.  

Job Description: 

  • Program Dates: The 2024 internship program will begin on May 19th, 2025, and end on August 8th, 2025.
  • Internship Hours: Up to 27 hours/week (maximum), Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; may vary by department.
  • Pay Range: $14 per hour up to $20 per hour (graduate/ master’s student), based on the number of credit hours earned. 

The Public Outreach and Education project aims to create an educational program that informs the public about local code enforcement regulations, promotes compliance, and reduces violations. Over 10 weeks, the intern will research local codes, develop educational materials (such as brochures, flyers, and social media content), and design an outreach strategy for distribution through county events and community organizations. The intern may also assist in updating the local government website, creating informational videos, and organizing workshops or booths to engage the public directly. The project concludes with the intern presenting the final materials, outreach plan, and an evaluation of the program's effectiveness.

Department Responsibilities:

  • The department is responsible for ensuring compliance with the codes, ordinances, and regulations established by the County Commissioners, aimed at protecting the health, safety, and well-being of Manatee County residents, businesses, and visitors.
  • Oversee the entire code enforcement process, including receiving complaints, conducting investigations, issuing enforcement actions, and ensuring compliance, in support of the department's mission to provide a fair and effective compliance program
  • Responsible for organizing and maintaining records of all enforcement cases, inspections, citations, fines, and compliance actions, ensuring all activities are properly documented and tracked in line with the department's accountability standards.
  • Act as one of the primary points of contact for the public to report violations, clarify code requirements, and receive updates on ongoing enforcement actions, supporting the department’s mission of fostering compliance and engaging the community.
  • Encourage property owners and residents to proactively adhere to county codes through education, outreach, and guidance, fostering a cooperative approach to compliance that benefits the community.

Internship Program Responsibilities:

  • A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program. 
  • Participate in all organized intern events and trainings.

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, or equivalent (if applicable) 
  • Eligible to work in the United States – we love local, national, and international students!  
  • Currently seeking a diploma or degree through an accredited secondary or post-secondary educational program, or within 12 months after graduation.
