What are the responsibilities and job description for the PROBATION OFFICER position at Manatee County Government?
This classification performs professional evaluation, investigation, supervision and counseling duties for persons within the jurisdiction of the Manatee County Court System. May be assigned to, and/or may assist in, the application and/or administration of special probation programs, classes and/or projects.
Note: In addition to the qualifications set forth in this job description, employees holding this position must have a background allowing them to have regular access to secured areas of certain governmental facilities. Such employees may, due to policies of the Sheriff or Chief Circuit Judge, be subject to independent background investigations which exceed those conducted by Manatee County.
Employees holding this position are hereby given notice that these independent officials, or their duly-authorized representatives may, based on the results of their investigation, decline to permit the employee access to secured areas of facilities under their operational control. In the event the County is unable to fully utilize such employees in other County operations not requiring secured area access, such employees are subject to non-disciplinary separation from County employment.

Indoor/Outdoor situation; high noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment up to 50 lbs. alone; up to 75 lbs. with assistance.

This is a safety-sensitive position. Employment and continued employment with Manatee County Government is contingent upon passing pre-employment and random substance screenings. An applicant/employee who fails to pass a drug/alcohol screening, shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of three (3) years.

Supervises probationers from County Courts on matters pertaining to conduct, employment and domestic adjustment.
Prepares a variety of reports for consolidation with other officers for statistical reports/records.
Initiates and/or assists in the issuance of court orders and other related documents associated with probation caseload management.
Conducts counseling sessions with probationers, employers, families, etc., in the office and out in the field.
Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, criminology or related human services field.
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in rehabilitative counseling or the criminal justice field.
Valid driver's license with valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.
In accordance with area of assignment, such as Offender Work Program, valid Florida CDL, Class B license with Passenger (P) endorsement may be required.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Minimum of one (1) year of experience in rehabilitative counseling or the criminal justice field.
Valid driver's license with valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.
In accordance with area of assignment, such as Offender Work Program, valid Florida CDL, Class B license with Passenger (P) endorsement may be required.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge of modern (within the last six years) probation practices and principals.
Knowledge of, and ability to effectively apply, principles underlying human behavior, growth and development.
Knowledge of social sciences, including sociology, psychology and economics.
Knowledge of, and ability to effectively apply, laws and regulations pertaining to probation work and functions and procedures of Family and Criminal courts.
Knowledge of applicable factors related to crime and delinquency. Knowledge and follow through with oral and written data.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to effectively interact with clients in a tactful, firm and professional manner.
Ability to efficiently use a personal computer, with ability to quickly learn software programs applicable to area of assignment.
Ability (and willingness) to adapt hours and efforts to demands of divisional caseload, which could include working hours outside normal scheduled workday.
Offender Work Program:
Position will supervise work crews consisting of offenders on probation assigned to assist with various county and municipal work projects, such as, park cleanups, right of way work, etc. In addition to duties listed above, this position will regularly operate, assess and assist in maintenance of transport bus, and related vehicles and all equipment. Offenders will be using miscellaneous tools related to their work, such as, rakes, hoes and shovels and some related power tools. Bilingual in Spanish highly desired. Valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with a Passenger (P) endorsement or must obtain within 120 days of hire. CDL permit required prior to starting work. Also, subject to Random Drug Testing, DOT category.

Salary : $22 - $33
