Work Location: 1112 Manatee Avenue West, Bradenton, Florida 34205
Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Performs entry to advanced level land surveying work (depending on qualifications) on road, utility, and related projects within the Manatee County. Serves as a member of a field survey crew, completing surveying tasks at an apprentice, intermediate, or advanced (lead) level (depending on qualifications). Completes office tasks involving field notes, survey drawings, maps, and research. May interact with County officials, contractors, consulting engineers, and the public.
Note: Position level and salary will be dependent on qualifications (DOQ).
Working Conditions
Indoor/Outdoor work environment. Work requires minor to medium physical exertion and/or physical strain, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather. Outdoor work is performed under a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and long exposure to sunlight. High noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment or materials up to 50 lbs. alone; up to 75 lbs. with assistance. Able to walk for long distances and traverse uneven terrain. Able to sit or stand for long periods of time. Ability to see, including identifying colors. Ability to hear.
Essential Functions
These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.
As a member of a survey crew, operates field survey equipment including total stations, data collectors, GPS, digital levels, measuring tape, chain, prism poles, level rod, etc. Ensures equipment required for field surveying is in good working condition and maintains supply inventory.
Senior level position takes a leadership role in the completion of survey projects, including assigning work and leading field survey crews. Ensures safety practices and procedures are followed and timely completion of projects is accomplished.
Records precise, clear, accurate, and complete field notes of surveying tasks performed. May also interpret and evaluate survey field notes.
Intermediate and Senior level positions prepare drawings and maps from survey data using CAD or GIS software.
Senior level position may assist management with policy and procedure development and training of less experienced employees.
Performs various research and analysis tasks in the office ensure accuracy of data. Ensures all necessary reports, records, and documents are properly completed and maintained.
May interact with contractors, consulting engineers, and the general public.
Performs all work in accordance with applicable rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and technical standards.
Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.
Survey Apprentice:
Performs general Surveying and Mapping office and field duties, Office duties include online Web research Survey Data, limited research of the Public Records, and other related survey or other property records. Indexing and archive Survey documents and other related documents; Field Crew member duties assist in the performing all aspects field surveying tasks, keeping and/or coping of Survey field notes, data collection with the download of Survey data sets to applicable application. Ability to follow directions with comprehension of end objective, read and interpret documents, sketches, maps, utilization of field and office data collectors and computer systems and their related software(s).
Survey Technician:
Performs intermediate Surveying and Mapping, utilizing survey equipment, such as GPS (GNSS) Units, Unmanned Aircraft Vehicles (Drones), and remote sensing surveying equipment; Performs intermediate office duties that includes, but is not limited to, online research of Public Records, County Historical Records, and any other related documents and/or data; ability to interpret and plot legal descriptions of deeds, easements, etc.; Prepare basic legal descriptions, sketches, establish data sets and/or field notes, utilize CAD and/or other related software; indexes and archives survey documents and other related material.
Senior Survey Specialist:
Performs Advanced Surveying and Mapping, utilizing survey equipment, such as Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS/) and remote sensing surveying equipment; performs advanced office duties that includes, but is not limited to, online research of Public Records and County Historical Records; reviews Land Title Property Reports, utilizing the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Labin’s website, the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS/NOAA) Opus website, and/or other surveying data sources; responsible for calculation of coordinates through the use of Coordinate Geometry (COGO); reviews and/or prepares legal descriptions and sketches, record plats, and other types of survey maps or reports, utilizing CAD and/or other related software.
Survey Apprentice:
High school diploma or equivalent. One or more years of work experience related to land surveying desired. Prior public sector experience a consideration but not required.
Survey Technician:
High school diploma or equivalent. Three (3) or more years of land surveying experience, to include 1 year with Manatee County Government or another public agency. Certified Survey Technician 1 designation or equivalent required. Completion of Florida Minimum Technical Standards survey course or equivalent. Able to consistently complete setup of a Total Station within 3 minutes.
Senior Survey Specialist:
High school diploma or equivalent. Associates degree desired. Five (5) or more years of land surveying experience, to include three (3) years with Manatee County Government or another public agency. Successful completion of 100 survey assignments with minimal deficiencies in first effort or demonstrated completion of similar work. Certified Survey Technician 2 designation or equivalent required. Completion of Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic training or equivalent. Completion of a Florida Law survey course of equivalent. Previous lead or supervisory experience desired, or completion of Manatee County Supervisor Training or equivalent.
All levels require a driver's license with valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Good knowledge and understanding of computer systems and software applications required to perform job duties, including AutoCAD and GIS.
Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills in order to interact professionally and effectively with staff, contractors, engineers, the general public, and other stakeholders. Able to explain facts, policies, and practices.
Survey Technician:
Knowledge of the principles of performing basic surveys. Ability to utilize and maintain surveying tools and equipment. Knowledge of trigonometry, geometry, algebra, coordinate geometry, and basic surveying computations. Have elementary comprehension of computer operating systems and GIS. Know how to interpret control point records and data sheets, as well as locate points. Ability to coordinate field and office work for a various type of surveys. Know how to keep neat and orderly field notes for surveying. Knowledge and comprehension of survey maps, documents, and their preparation. A basic knowledge of the terminology and principles of drafting, including computer-aided drafting (CAD).
Public Relations and the ability to interact and work with the public and governmental agencies. Ability to complete assigned tasks and complete obligations efficiently. Ability to demonstrate ethical and professional behavior.
Senior Survey Specialist:
Knowledge of the principles of practice and performing a wide variety of surveys. Ability to utilize and maintain surveying tools and equipment. Knowledge of trigonometry, geometry, algebra, coordinate geometry, and basic surveying computations. Have a good understanding and comprehension of computer operating systems and GIS.
