LIFEGUARD (Part-time and Full-Time Positions)
Role and Responsibilities
The Lifeguard/WSI is responsible for teaching safe and effective group and/or private swim classes for our members and is required to purpose and maintain educational standards commensurate with quality and commitment to aquatics safety.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Teaches various levels and age groups in accordance with Active Wellness instructional guidelines.
- Plan lessons, select appropriate drills and evaluate the student's progress.
- Present proper demonstrations and explain skills, analyze and correct performance, minimize fear, and use appropriate teaching devices.
- Maintain a safe and positive teaching environment.
- Attend all in-service training.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare course completion certificates.
- Perform all swimming strokes and skills taught at all levels.
- Effectively communicate each student's progress either to the student directly or to the student's parents where appropriate.
- Administer emergency care to members and guests in need of assistance
- Work as a TEAM with all other departments
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor
Other Functions
- Be knowledgeable about all programs and activities offered by MJCC.
- Promote club services and activities
- Assist with keeping the club well stocked and clean
- Attend MJCC meetings and trainings
- Handle injury and illness and security incident reporting
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Lifeguards must maintain the following:
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (or equivalent training).
- American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer (or equivalent training).
- American Red Cross First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (or equivalent training).
- Performance test are as follows:
- Swim 300 yards continuous
- Tread water for two minutes using legs only
- Demonstrate the proper use of rescue equipment
- Surface Dive to the deepest part of the pool and retrieve a 10 pound brick
- Perform aquatic rescue & CPR/AED skills
- Must be detail oriented, organized and highly responsive with a commitment to customer service
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Attend Active Wellness site meetings and trainings
- Basic computer skills, customer service skills, results oriented, ability to multitask, and commitment to the fitness industry

- AED/CPR/First Aid Certified
- National Personal Training Certification(s) required (see approved Certification, Licenses and Permits list) as well as modality specific certifications as required by role (if applicable)
- Proof of citizenship or legal status
Physical and Working Conditions- Ability to take the responsibility for the health and safety of others
- Ability to stand for several hours in a same shift; ability to lift 25 lbs
