Work Environment : Varied. Work is frequently performed around hazardous machinery and can involve some threat to personal safety if safety standards are not observed. Work frequently is performed in inclement weather. Work involves responding to emergencies.

Summary

Perform full array of duties related to the operation of complex heavy motorized street sweeping equipment to provide clean streets and other public areas for the Township; inspects and performs preventive maintenance on sweeper and auxiliary equipment; assists in performing other street maintenance duties as assigned; performs other related duties as required.

Essential functions

  • Operates street sweepers and other related heavy equipment and tools to sweep streets, gutters, mediums, parking lots, courtyards and public works yard; transports sweepings to Compost Park; clears debris from right-of-ways; cleans storm drains and inlets; identifies and reports hazardous conditions.
  • Familiarity with the geographic layout of Manheim Township to accurately interpret maps and locate work sites.
  • Adjusts and operates brooms, guards, and other related auxiliary equipment; regularly inspects and replaces brooms as needed.
  • Inspects sweeper for safety and mechanical defects; checks fuel, fluid levels, air pressure and hydraulic systems; performs routine preventive maintenance and reports the need for required maintenance; inspects auxiliary equipment for proper operating condition and safety.
  • Washes and cleans sweeper and auxiliary equipment on a routine basis.
  • Responds to emergency clean-ups including spills; performs special sweeps as necessary.
  • Maintains a variety of records and reports on street sweeping operations, logs daily reports.
  • Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment including explaining street sweeping operations; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Report any incidents, accidents, injurie, and / or property damage to Public Works management.
  • Suggest improvements to route efficiency to Public Works management.
  • Identify and / or report any roadway deficiencies, roadway obstructions, damaged Public Works infrastructure and damaged roadway signage.
  • Work in collaboration with Streets Crew Leader on development and implementation of consistent work order reporting. Work with the Streets Crew Leader to develop, implement and adhere to comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures for the street sweeper.
  • Perform snow removal duties during winter season by shoveling, snow blowing, plowing, and spreading materials on roads and sidewalks. On-call 24-hours per day, seven days per week during winter plowing season (December 1 through March 31).

  • Performs other maintenance duties as assigned including performing tasks assigned by Public Works Streets Crew Leader.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state / local agencies, Township management and staff, and the public.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Attend training seminars and participate in on-the-job training to develop skills and knowledge and assist in providing training to other employees that may fill in as backup drivers of this equipment.

  • Sufficient physical ability and mobility to sit for prolonged periods of time
  • Dexterity is mandatory as this job requires frequent use of hands and fingers
  • Ability to reach, twist, grasp, and perform repetitive hand movement during daily tasks
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and / or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment and vehicles
  • Ability to verbally and electronically communicate to exchange information.
  • Ability to see in the normal visual range with or without correction.
  • Ability to hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
  • Competencies

  • Knowledge of light, medium, and heavy skilled equipment and heavy truck operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair procedures for vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures for equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of department policy, procedures and work rules.
  • Ability to work independently but remain flexible in accordance with demands of schedule and work team in order to achieve department objectives.
  • Ability to adhere to safety standards and recognize safety warnings and hazards.
  • Ability to measure distances, add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to demonstrate clear vision during the day and at night, and sound hearing to avoid possible hazards, including pedestrians, animals, moving vehicles and road equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual tasks or operate equipment for extended periods of time in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to demonstrate polite and courteous manner toward fellow employees and Township customers.
  • Abilities

  • Operate a street sweeper skillfully and safely.
  • Maintain and perform minor repairs on equipment.
  • Read and understand street maps. Plan and route assigned area for efficient sweeping.
  • Prepare basic records and reports of work performed.
  • Perform manual labor.
  • Safely and effectively operate a variety of specialized maintenance equipment, tools and materials.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and tablets.
  • Work independently and use sound judgment in performing assignments safely in traffic.
  • Work irregular hours including evenings and nights.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 3 years of experience working in Public Works or related field
  • 3 years of experience performing streets maintenance duties that includes the operation of a street sweeper, dump truck and other heavy equipment
  • Preferred Education and Experience

  • Class B Commercial Driver's License
  • Tanker Endorsement
