JOB DESCRIPTION (6/21)

Job Title: 1st Shift Custodian

Reports To: Head Custodian

Summary: The 1st Shift Custodian is considered a working supervisor. This position assigns and leads the work of other custodial staff members. The 1st Shift Custodian keeps the district's buildings and grounds in a state of operating excellence to ensure the quality of the educational program. This position provides leadership, assistance and oversight to the cleanliness and maintenance of both the interior and exterior of the educational facility and outdoor campus. The

1st Shift Custodian will enjoy interacting with our students, staff and stakeholders to promote a positive learning experience. This is a first shift position working Monday through Friday with periodic evening hours as needs arise.

Occasional early mornings, late evenings and weekends are required to ensure the operational objectives of providing a safe, clean and welcoming environment are maintained for all our organizational members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Directs and instructs custodians verbally and in writing all routine preventive maintenance scheduling and other

Buildings & Grounds Department activities.

  • Provide organization skills necessary to facilitate the cleaning and maintenance of all essential building systems.
  • Has the ability to teach, mentor and supervise all routine custodial cleaning duties, including but not limited to, sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, polishing, disinfection of surfaces and vacuuming of floors.
  • Perform, evaluate and direct snow removal operations as needed to maintain safe conditions.
  • Organize and coordinate all facility use setups and teardowns.
  • Organize, coordinate and perform annual summer maintenance and cleaning of district rooms.
  • Ability to use a computer and programs, i.e. Word, E-Mail and Absence Management software.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to adjust to district needs as applicable, including weather-related, facility and other district events.
  • Ability to pay attention to cleaning quality and assist with employee performance when need.
  • Attend classes, seminars, webinars as needed to stay proficient in building operations.
  • Act as a representative of the school district working politely and tactfully with the public, community groups, students, parents and other employees.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as in a team environment in a positive manner.
  • Other duties may be required or assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of pool operation, maintenance and water chemistry for a large, high-use district pool.
  • Water sanitation methods and techniques; disinfecting, maintaining water quality and testing records.
  • Applied knowledge of chemical testing methods and levels.
  • Knowledge of automatic chemical feed systems, electrical panels, timing controls, motors, chemical handling, testing equipment, boilers, pumps and HVAC systems; chlorinating equipment; operation and maintenance.
  • Able to effectively communicate operational needs, concerns and procedures to stakeholders.
  • Coordinate all maintenance and contractor activities.
  • Responsible for ordering all materials and supplies to ensure the entire facility is maintained.
  • Detailed knowledge of State health regulation standards.
  • Able to maintain clear and complete written records of pool maintenance; ability to read and understand written procedures, regulations and safety warning labels.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.

Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

  • Previous custodial experience, 3 - 5 years preferred.
  • High School diploma required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Possesses or is willing to obtain a Certified Pool Operators Certificate.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license.

Language Skills:

Ability to communicate effectively -listening, orally and in writing. Ability to read and interpret technical publications, such as equipment manuals and safety procedures.

Mathematical Skills:

Perform the four basic arithmetic operations, using whole numbers, and common and decimal fractions. Knowledge of standard units of measure and their inter-relationships.

Reasoning Ability:

Apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Interpret instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Interact effectively, and communicate with all district staff, public and students in a positive manner.
  • Perform repetitive or short-cycle work.
  • Ability to understand and apply district safe work practices and procedures to job performance.
  • Use basic hand tools, some power tools and custodial equipment.

  • Oversees and manages that all department equipment and supplies are maintained to serve the building needs.
  • Performs ongoing preventive maintenance and minor repair on plumbing, custodial equipment, building structures and hardware.
  • Performs normal operator adjustments, and service to facility equipment.
  • Coordinates the scheduling and assigning extra time for custodians.
  • Maintains facility security.
  • Maintain work-related records and prepare various reports as directed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs onto ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks.

Occasionally the employee will lift and / or move up to 90 pounds such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push / pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays while performing the duties of this job. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may work in high, precarious places, work in outside weather conditions and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, dust or airborne particles, potentially harmful chemicals. Workplace safety training is provided.
