Position Overview
The High School Guidance Counselor supports students in their academic, career, personal, and social development. This role involves working closely with students, teachers, administrators, and parents to create a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment. The counsellor helps students explore post-secondary opportunities, resolve personal and academic challenges, and develop plans for future success.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counselling to address academic, career, social, and emotional issues.
- Assist students with course selection, graduation requirements, and college/career planning.
- Support students in setting and achieving academic goals.
- Identify at-risk students and develop intervention plans in collaboration with staff and parents.
- Coordinate with teachers, administrators, and outside professionals to support student well-being.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records.
- Advocate for students' best interests within the school environment.
- Stay up to date with educational policies, post-secondary requirements, scholarships, and career trends.
Qualifications
- Valid Iowa issued certification/licensure for school counselling.
- Experience working with high school students in an educational setting.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with college admissions processes, financial aid, and scholarship navigation.
- Familiarity with educational software and tools (Infinite Campus experience is a plus)
- Crisis intervention training or experience.
