Job Description :
We are seeking a Director of Drafting and Design to lead our team of residential draftsmen and oversee all operational aspects of the drafting department. This position requires a blend of technical proficiency in residential design, building codes, and Revit software, along with strong leadership and operational management skills. This role will ensure that our drafting and design processes are efficient, accurate, and aligned with the company’s high standards for quality and customer satisfaction.
As the Director of Drafting and Design, you will work closely with sales, construction managers, quality control managers, and estimating to deliver construction-ready plans that meet project deadlines and quality expectations. The ideal candidate is both a technical expert and a strategic leader, focused on process improvement, team development, and achieving organizational goals.
Key Responsibilities :
Team Leadership and Development
- Lead and Mentor : Supervise and guide a team of draftsmen, providing mentorship and support to foster skill development and professional growth.
- Team Goals : Set and monitor team goals in alignment with the company’s objectives, ensuring timely delivery of quality design documents.
- Performance Management : Conduct regular performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and establish individual development plans to support team members’ career progression.
Operational Oversight
Process Improvement : Identify and implement process improvements that streamline drafting and design workflows, increase efficiency, and reduce errors, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.Resource Management : Manage department resources, including staffing, budgeting, and software / tools, to ensure team productivity and cost-effectiveness.ERP Integration : Ensure that design and drafting processes are integrated within the company’s ERP system to establish a single source of truth and maintain data accuracy across departments.Technical Competency and Quality Control
Technical Oversight : Apply expert knowledge of residential design requirements, local and national building codes, and construction standards to guide team output and ensure compliance.Revit Expertise : Serve as the department’s Revit specialist, optimizing software use and troubleshooting issues to support high-quality design and production.Quality Assurance : Oversee all construction documentation, reviewing drawings for accuracy, adherence to codes, and alignment with client and project requirements.Cross-Functional Collaboration
Project Coordination : Collaborate with construction managers, estimators, and other departments to align drafting deliverables with project schedules and ensure effective communication.Stakeholder Communication : Act as a liaison between the drafting team and other stakeholders, addressing questions, providing updates, and ensuring all parties are aligned on project needs and timelines.Client Interaction : When necessary, participate in client meetings to ensure project requirements are accurately captured and understood by the drafting team.Documentation and Standardization
Standards Development : Develop and maintain drafting standards, templates, and protocols to promote consistency and quality across all projects.Code Compliance : Ensure that all designs comply with relevant codes and regulations, supporting efficient permitting processes and high-quality project outcomes.Requirements :
Experience : Minimum of 7 years in residential drafting, or architecture, or design, with at least 3 years in management or supervisory role, preferably within a single-family homebuilding environment.Technical Skills : Advanced proficiency in Revit, with a strong foundation in residential construction, design requirements, and building codes.Leadership Abilities : Proven experience in managing and developing teams, with a collaborative and motivating approach to leadership.Operational Skills : Demonstrated experience in process improvement, resource management, and familiarity with ERP systems in the context of architectural operations.Communication Skills : Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly convey expectations and collaborate effectively across departments.Education : Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Drafting, Engineering, or a related field preferred.Benefits :
