What are the responsibilities and job description for the Production Manager position at Manufacturer-Steel Fabrication?
Mid-sized profitable manufacturing operation, part of a $1billion dollar NYSE listed company, with a fabrication and assembly operation with approximately 75 employees.
The candidate directs and coordinates the activities of scheduling, production, quality and safety in the manufacture of fabricated products by performing the following personally or through subordinates.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Fundamental Process Application
- Incorporates and continuously applies the 80/20 business process throughout the business unit.
- Develops or revises standard operational practices to improve processes and perform efficient operations while minimizing costs.
- Develops workflow policies and procedures that improve efficiency without compromising safety or quality
Operations
- Manages all production activities of business unit (15-40 employees)
- Works with engineering on new product development and existing product revision changes.
- Communicates regularly with upper management regarding problems or issues impacting production
Leadership
- Monitors and reacts to key performance measures and is responsible for achieving acceptable results.
- Identifies operational improvements, corrective actions and/or capital equipment that will serve to improve products, processes and overall costs to produce.
- Develops operating budgets and meets spending objectives.
- Mentors direct reports in problem solving, leadership skills and ongoing process improvement efforts.
- Trains, coaches and motivates employees; accepts ideas from employees and embraces team work to accomplish key operating objectives
Inventory Control/Scheduling
- Plans operations by establishing priorities and sequences for manufacturing products.
- Reviews work orders from sales to determine types, quantities, and specifications of products and scheduled delivery dates in order to plan manufacturing operations.
- Assists purchasing in defining production material needs and Maintenance Repair and Operational (MRO) items.
- Conducts regular production meetings to review schedule and identify and resolve operational, manufacturing and maintenance problems to prevent delays and reduce costs.
- Evaluates machine resources to ensure continued production and minimal downtime
Human Resources
- Reviews the hiring of subordinates with the Business Unit Manager; conducts or reviews and approves subordinate performance reviews, pay changes and any disciplinary action that results.
- Applies human resources policies and practices and assures adherence to labor laws as well as fair and equitable treatment of employees.
- Ensures that safety and health standards are met ‘at all times’ to keep the organization accident-free
- Understands and adheres to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations
Quality Standards
- Establishes and maintains production and quality control processes.
- Establishes quality metrics and holds employees accountable for meeting these standards.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly manages 1-4 subordinate supervisors and/or non-supervisory employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully:
- Must have experience in an ERP system for scheduling, inventory control and reporting requirements.
- Will become operationally proficient in the key ERP system roles that impact factory operations.
- The individual must have proficiency in the use of a personal computer utilizing a Windows based environment with Microsoft Office applications Power Point, Excel, Word, and Outlook as well as other applicable software.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline from an accredited four-year college or university; and/or four to ten years related progressive experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
