About the Elementary Assistant Position
Many Rivers is seeking a Lower Elementary Assistant (grades 1-3). An Elementary Assistant works in a classroom under the supervision of the Guide (lead teacher.) Supporting the work of the Guide in maintaining the integrity of the Montessori learning environment is the Assistant’s chief responsibility. The Elementary Assistant may work some days in the before and/or aftercare programs as well. This role includes professional development and growth opportunities.
Status
- Elementary Assistant is an hourly, non-exempt position offered on a full-time basis.
Hours
- The Elementary Assistant is a 40 hour per week position. The school is open from 7:30 to 5:30 with the core school day extending from 8:30-3:30, with the specific hours of the Elementary Assistant negotiated on an individual basis.
- One all staff meeting per month from 5:45-7:00 PM (Assistant will be paid overtime)
- Occasional evening/weekend hours plus overnight chaperone duties for school trips.
Specific Responsibilities
- Support the guide (lead teacher) so that the guide may support the children.
- Nurture the growth of the students and support their independence.
- Ensure physical and emotional safety for the students.
- Assist with classroom management through supporting and reminding children of the classroom guidelines.
- Observe, record and share with the guide what the children are working on and what they are drawn to.
- Prepare the classroom environment for class each day.
- Assist with lunch time, outside play, transitions, clean up, arrivals and dismissals.
- Make and prepare materials
- Work with children as directed by the Guide.
- Lead small groups as directed.
- Assist with paperwork, as directed by the teacher.
- Participate in conferences and meetings as requested.
- Maintain positive and professional relationships with families while deferring questions about a student to the guide.
- Manage the classroom in the teacher's absence.
- Attend all-staff meetings and other key school events as directed.
- Assist in staffing before and/or aftercare.
- Works at least one of the periods known as Winter Break (Feb) and Spring Break (April).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or commensurate work experience
- Ability to pass a background check
- Consistency in behavior and temperament
- Possess a positive attitude, strong work ethic, genuine & joyful nature, and quiet and welcoming manner with children
Compensation
Hourly wage from $16.75/hr to $20.45/hr. Benefits include health and dental insurance, retirement plan, paid sick leave, tuition discount for dependent students, and disability/life insurance.
