We are an 18-25 bed residential care facility for adolescent clients ages 13-18 on the autism spectrum. Our clients are high functioning. Maple Lake Academy is a treatment center dedicated to working with adolescents, and their families.
Who we are
Maple Lake Academy is a residential treatment center for adolescents (boys and girls 13 to 18) on the autistic spectrum. Our students are high functioning dealing with deficits in social skills, life skills, inability to understand their own emotions or put their emotions in to words. Many of our students are emotionally fragile or don’t have strong emotional intelligence. We provide a safe and nurturing home like environment for our students to learn skills that push them in the areas mentioned above. Our team works with our client population daily, hands on, and in one on one situations.
Maple Lake Academy sets ourselves apart in the mental-health industry by using an attachment-based approach, focusing on relationship building and modeling what healthy, secure relationships look and feel like. As a member of the MLA team, you'll be trained extensively in attachment styles, and how to best help teens in our program to build healthy relationships with themselves, their peers, and caregivers. We seek to create a safe environment for students and employees to learn, grow, develop, explore, make mistakes, and build lasting impactful relationships with those around them.
The RN/LPN Role
The RN/LPN oversees nursing operations of Maple Lake Academy while on shift, directly manages the medical care of the students ages 13-18, is responsible for medical emergencies and the general medical needs of the students, and works directly with the psychiatrist and pharmacy to maintain medication orders and all medication management at Maple Lake Academy. Flexible with days worked.
Schedule
evenings from 5 to 9PM and then alternating every other Saturday a morning from 10 to 2PM and 5PM to 9PM. The days during the week are flexible and would be discussed during an interview.
- On-call for emergencies/Flexible.
Education Requirements
- Associate, bachelor’s degree/Masters.
- Active Utah License as a Registered Nurse/License Practical Nurse
Preferred Experience
- Nursing: Experience (preferred)
- Some Psych nursing experience is preferred but not necessary, willing to train.
- Must be comfortable with psychiatric medications.
Additional Requirements
- Age 21
- Ability to pass a background check upon hire
- Current valid Driver’s License.
Essential Job Responsibilities and Duties
- Achieve and maintain certification in Positive Control Systems (PCS) upon hire
- Provide a safe and nurturing environment for clients
- Implement therapeutic intervention for each client
- Determine when students are to be placed on bedrest, respond to reports of pain or sickness and assess the students, accompany students to appointments, check vitals and weight weekly, accurately chart the student’s mood, behaviors and affect.
- Engage in weekly treatment team meeting and communicate pertinent information
- Administer minor first aid to employees on campus as needed and triage any on-the-job accidents/injuries to determine if they need to be sent to Work Med
- Medication administration
- Monitor resident cleanliness, hygiene and safety
- Communicate directly with parents about medical concerns, needs, appointments, changes in medication etc.
- Attend all required training meetings
- Maintain an up-to-date training record
- Be creative, take initiative, implement programs that will improve the medical department
- Commitment to providing culturally competent services, with an ongoing commitment to training and development
- Good communication skills both written and verbal
- Ability to plan and prioritize work

Communication. Collaboration, organization, documentation via email, text, phone calls etc. When communicating will avoid sharing confidential information and will maintain professionalism with assignments and responsibilities.
Decision-making skills. Nurses must be able to balance the strengths and weaknesses of different options and decide the best decision. Many decisions have a significant impact on clients.
Interpersonal skills. Nurses need strong interpersonal skills because they regularly interact with people. They will often collaborate on teams and must develop positive working relationships with their co-workers.
Leadership skills. Nurses must be able to direct/lead the residential staff, other medical staff and team, and oversee the implementation of medical interventions for the residents. They must coordinate and communicate well.
Organizational skills. Organizational skills are essential for nurses. They must be able to manage several clients through-out the week and prioritize tasks. Maintain close communication with the team, and the clients they work with giving pertinent and important information that helps each family to move forward in the therapeutic process.
Speaking skills. Nurses rely on speaking skills to give presentations, teach and direct. They must clearly communicate information and instructions to the staff. Must exhibit confidence and have the ability to encourage others. Nurses must understand how to communicate and work with the clients/families they serve, especially in difficult situations.

Most youth residential treatment programs use a behavioral approach to therapeutic and residential support, but we set ourselves apart for our students by using an attachment-based approach. Everything we do is through the lens of attachment theory. As a member of the MLA team, you'll get great training in attachment styles, and how to best help teens in our program to build healthy relationships with themselves, their peers, and caregivers. Additionally, we focus on helping students identify the core issues behind their behaviors and thoughts, and then how to address those core needs. We seek to create a safe environment for students and employees to learn, grow, develop, explore, make mistakes, and build lasting impactful relationships with those around them.
Commitment
To maintain the stability and effectiveness in our program, and because our residents value the relationships they build with their mentors, it is important that our staff are committed to the role they undertake at Maple Lake Academy. While we do not require a minimum commitment period in the position; we believe it's important that staff are committed to their position for at least a six months to a year. Many employees at Maple Lake Academy's programs have been contributing their talents for at least 2 or more years, which also provides you a great team of dedicated coworkers!
