Essential Functions:
- Assist in research and diagnostics, as it relates to efficient operation of the Research farm and as required for special projects at the BEC.
- Participate in the sanitation, housekeeping, and preventative maintenance for Research farm.
- Solid skills in the operating of farm and research equipment with a high degree of efficiency and a very high level of accuracy.
- Follows research OAWs. Study protocols and collects data with a high level of accuracy.
- Assist in veterinary diagnostics such as necropsies and collects organs for research as necessary. Collects samples, maintains and records experimental data in support of research activities.
- Responsible for preventative maintenance of all equipment within the Research Farm.
- Maintains cleanliness of animal facilities. Cleans and disinfects rooms after studies.
- Participate in all technical activities related to developer/ breeder and grow out programs at ML Farms, including EPIC activities in the EPIC Test house, feed management, egg pick up.
- Request replacement parts and ensures adequate parts inventory to supervisor.
- Accountable for the condition and upkeep of all buildings and assets contained on the farm.
- Keep a log of maintenance and other performed work on the computer in the form of spreadsheets, etc.
- Ensure all biosecurity, safety and preventative maintenance guidelines and policies are followed.
- Minor data entry when needed.
- Ability to lead weekend work in compliance with each test specific needs; with farm staff or inter departmental staff if needed.
- Perform related duties as required if trained or qualified to do.
Job Specifications: Practical work experience, such as previous farm experience required. Experienced in the raising poultry, its management, and husbandry are essential.
Requires knowledge associated with Labor Grade Program and ability to attain LG I status within one year of hire. Requires knowledge or ability to attain knowledge of Duck Well-being. Experience in equipment minor repairs and maintenance.
Skills and Abilities:
Ability to identify problems as they relate to poultry health, performance and well-being. Utilizing supporting problem-solving methodology.
Ability to collect live animal data such as growth, feed consumption, carcass composition, biological samples, and make observations of duck behavior and health status.
Ability to incorporate established Live Production operating analysis worksheet (OAWs), biosecurity guidelines, Animal well-being and company policy.
Time Management skills required. Ability to manage multiple tasks/projects and work according to a schedule. Is expected to calibrate and use sophisticated scientific equipment.
Good verbal and written communication skills; use of tact when confronting issues within the company. Can be trusted with confidential information.
Knowledge of or ability to learn how to perform a necropsy. To include organs, harvest for dissection and study. Ability to use aseptic techniques in culturing samples of animals and for hatcheries and farms environments.
Position does perform duties with some low to moderate level of pathogen exposure. May be exposed to abrasive chemicals.
Schedule to include weekend, Holiday work and extended hours to meet research project demands.
Working Climate: Position entails standing, lifting up to 50 pound, moving, climbing, and working in various environmental exposures, including extreme cold and heat. Requires adherence to all biosecurity rules,
