Overview :
Provides plans, coordinates or manages in-service education for facility employees adn coordinates and manages the infection control program for residents and staff.
Qualifications :
Registered Nurse is preferred.
Must have current state license to practice as a registered nurse (RN). Current CPR certifications and addtional certitification in nursing specialty desired.
At least 2 years of experience working in staff development and infection control preferred.
Excellent technical, assessment and documentation skills.
In depth knowledge of standards of practice and regulations for long term care.
Ability to organize work flow, respond to emergencies, set a professional example, and be detailed oriented.
Restorative care philosophy, excellent professional skills (both assessment and hands-on), and good communication and organizational skills.
Demonstrates knowledge of excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Has the ability to recognize educational needs of the long term care facility.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to communicate orally and through written reports and other documents relating to resident, staff, and others.
Ability to perform essential duties as outlined below.
Supervisory Responsibilites
Supervises care provided by staff and communicates observations to direct supervisors.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizational policies and applicable laws.
Is in charge of facility in the absence of higher ranking management staff.
Uses independent judgement and discretion on behalf of the organization in the performance of these duties.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Care and Services :
Responsible for full facility education program, including orientation and ongoing in-service.
Provide department specific orientation- assigns preceptor and specific lists of tasks to be completed per department to assure orientation is completed.
Designs, plans and provides education programs on all shifts and for all departments.
Schedules inservices for all departments based on mandatory inservices required and department / resident specific / acuity specific training, such as :
A component dialysis every month.
Respiratory care ever other month.
Nutrition every month (alternating conditons).
Working with residents with dementia-every other month.
Customer service : monthly
Documentation : TBD.
Medicaion related training every month.
ADL related training every month.
Housekeeping training every month.
Dietary training in conjuction with dietician-monthly.
New policies, procedures, and systems.
Uses a variety of methods of teaching to assist staff to grasp concepts and provide excellent resident care.
Participates in the staff's evaluation process by providing attendance records and observations of employee's performance.
Maintains current education records of classess and content of in-services conducted, attendance of all facility employees.
Assures all CNA staff receives the 12 hour mandatory training required under the regulations.
Plans, schedules and posts monthly calendar of education programs.
Create lesson plans containing objectives, course content, method of instruction and method of evaluation.
Applies adult leaning principles.
If provided by the facility conducts and maintains the nurse-aid trainging program.
Monitors the overall surveillance system of infection and exposure in the facility involving employees and residents.
Maintains appropriate records documenting facility infections, exposure, and control procedures implemented.
Reviews monthly infections summaries to identify patterns and or trends in infections.
Analyzes infections to identify potential underlying conditions contributing to risk of developing infections.
Monitors the practice of infection control procedures within the facility
Reports infectious disease as appropriate to the Director of Nursing, Administrator, Medical Director, and to the county or state health officals.
Acts as a consultant to department managers, administrator, and facility perosnnel concerning infection control issues, policies, and procedures.
Develops an exposure control education plan for personnel in the facility inclucing orientation in-servcie and ongoing in-services. Recors wll be kept of these in-services
Infection preventionists duties will be shared with the Assistant Director of Nursing and will report to the ADON for all infection protocol policies.
