Position Summary:
The Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining large construction machinery like excavators, bulldozers, graders, and loaders, by identifying mechanical issues, replacing worn parts, performing preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting complex hydraulic, electrical, and engine systems to ensure equipment operates properly and safely; often requiring travel to local job sites to make repairs on-location.
Responsibilities:
• Inspecting equipment:
Regularly checking heavy machinery for wear and tear, fluid levels, and potential malfunctions.
• Diagnosing problems:
Utilizing diagnostic tools to pinpoint the cause of mechanical issues, including hydraulic failures, engine problems, and electrical faults.
• Performing repairs:
Replacing worn parts like bearings, seals, belts, and hoses.
• Maintenance tasks:
Completing routine servicing including oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication.
• Troubleshooting complex systems:
Analyzing electrical circuits, hydraulic pressure, and pneumatic systems to identify and resolve malfunctions.
• Parts ordering and inventory management:
Identifying required parts, placing orders, and maintaining a parts inventory.
• Recordkeeping:
Documenting repair details, maintenance schedules, and parts used on each piece of equipment.
• Operating heavy equipment:
Occasionally operating equipment to test functionality after repairs.
Required skills and qualifications:
• Mechanical aptitude:
Strong understanding of diesel engine mechanics, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and heavy equipment components.
• Diagnostic skills:
Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and technical manuals.
• Hand tools proficiency:
Expertise in using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment.
• Physical ability:
Capability to work in demanding physical conditions, including lifting heavy objects and working in confined spaces.
• Technical knowledge:
Reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and manufacturer specifications.
• Safety awareness:
Adherence to safety protocols when working with heavy machinery.
Work environment:
• Primarily based in a repair shop, but may require travel to job sites to perform repairs on heavy equipment operating in construction, mining, forestry, and agricultural settings.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (additional technical training preferred).
Proven 3 - 5 years of experience repairing and maintaining diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and small engine mechanics.
Ability to troubleshoot and repair both mechanical and electrical systems.
Strong attention to detail with a focus on safety and quality of work.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 75 lbs) and work in various outdoor conditions.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends when needed.
Must have own tools and reliable transportation.
