Location/Dept: Hospital - Nursing Administration
PT - 60/pp; Nights (12-hour shifts)
This position is split between Nursing Admin and ER RN
Job Summary:
Responsible indirectly for the care of patients and the management of personnel in all three shifts. Acts in the absence of Administration regarding administrative issues.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Provides direction to a variety of staff when necessary.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Uses only approved abbreviations.
- Understands patient safety goals & actions taken.
- Uses 2 patient identifiers before giving treatments, demonstrates process.
- Understands read back of verbal orders/critical lab values & can state process.
- Understands procedure to clarify physician orders.
- Uses standing orders when indicated.
- Accurately calls report to MD as warranted by condition; reports to other providers as needed.
- Reports sentinel events or adverse drug reactions or incidents as warranted.
- Uses final verification before invasive procedures & can verbalize correct process & documents in EHR.
- Reassesses patient in response to changes in condition after intervention as needed & documents in EHR.
- Communicates with & provides education to patients, caregivers, & family members in a timely manner (using respect & dignity when dealing with death & dying) & documents in EHR.
- Makes frequent rounds to MS, SCA, OB and ER (minimum of once per shift). Keeps report sheet up to date.
- Assesses patients in response to changes in condition or as requested by staff.
- Provides appropriate information to Nurse Callers and maintains call log timely and accurately.
- Arranges for transportation of patient to another hospital and communicates to staff/patient.
- Assists nursing staff on procedures/treatments as requested. Documents in EHR accordingly.
- Knowledgeable about staffing patterns on MS, SCA, OB, Supervisors, & ESD & uses guidelines appropriately.
- Uses acuity systems for accurate staffing needs of MS, SCA & OB.
- Makes adjustments/additions/or call offs as needs indicate.
- Replaces call ins when need arises.
- Acts as resource person to staff regarding policies & procedures, questions, & technical skills.
- Provides meal relief to SCA, & assures MS, OB, & ESD are able to provide meal coverage.
- Maintains regulatory compliance with current standards.
- Arranges annual competency & keeps appropriate records.
- Does monthly QI checks on each glucometer & maintains appropriate records.
- Knowledgeable of high risk meds & can state correct process of administration.
- Knowledgeable of look alike/sound alike meds & can give examples of such.
- Obtains meds after hours for meds that can be given prior to pharmacy review utilizing automatic medication delivery system.
- Assist staff in administration of meds that require calculation of dosage as requested.
- Understands what meds can be given by what discipline.
- Replenishes crash cart supplies/meds when used.
- Maintains security of narcotics & drugs.
- Uses barcode scanning when administering meds on units where available.
- Uses IV smart pumps appropriately.
- Uses Omnicell as required to obtain, waste & return.
- Reports utility management issues to appropriate manager/company.
- Arranges for medical equipment from outside sources as needed.
- Initiates emergency plans during severe weather, snow, security treats, internal/external disasters, & terrorist threats.
- Responds to all internal codes.
- Obtains supplies from Materials Management/Central/Laundry, etc. as requested.
- Notifies administration on call as warranted.
- Understands procedure to clarify physician orders when needed.
- Gives shift report to oncoming supervisor in private location.
- Approves schedule changes with staff if not done by manager.
- Practices accurate continuity of meds across the continuum.
- Maintains master schedule for call-ins, changes in staffing, on call, etc.
- Changes on-call surgery staff schedule as requested.
- Reports sentinel events or adverse drug reactions or incidents as warranted.
- Understands Patient Safety Goals & actions taken.
- Notifies surgery staff for changes to surgery schedule as requested by surgeon & relays information to surgeon.
- Creates master schedule & keeps up-to-date with changes.
- Prepares 6-week schedule for MS, SCA, & Nursing Supervisors.

Education and Experience:
- Minimum Associate’s degree in nursing, Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Indiana.
- Must have at least 1 yr experience in a supervisory role and/or demonstrates strong clinical skills & leadership qualities such as decision making/judgement (can assess a situation & adapt/react appropriately), effectively communicates, interacts well with others (team player), & role model
- Attends CPR annually & timely.
- Attends ACLS, PALS, & neonatal resuscitation every 2 years.
Physical Requirements:
- Constant walking, standing, talking & use of hands; frequent standing.
- Frequently lifts up to 25 lbs; occasionally up to 50 lbs
