Job Summary
Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) is hiring a Lab Technician in the Physical Science department. This position is responsible for the organization and preparation of equipment and materials for laboratory experiments in the instructional areas of physical science which include chemistry, physics, engineering and geology.
Essential Functions
30% - Prepares laboratory programs and determines lab set-ups; prepares materials and equipment required for laboratory classes; sets up, replenishes and breaks down materials and equipment for laboratory experiments; maintains clean lab area; assembles equipment and demonstrates the use of apparatus.
30% - Assists in and/or monitors the preparation and cleaning of laboratory equipment and laboratories; provides assistance and consultation for instructors regarding performance of laboratories.
15% - Learns, tests, installs, and updates software/hardware needed for equipment related to the lab such as probeware, sensors, etc
15% - Maintains, cleans and repairs equipment and checks for proper storage, effective operation and preventative maintenance; maintains the chemical hygiene of the physical science labs; reports or conducts repair requirements; establishes maintenance and inventory records
10% - Assists Instructional Services Coordinator Sr as needed; performs other duties as assigned commensurate to grade level of position.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree from a regionally accredited institution and one (1) year of full-time equivalent laboratory experience such as maintaining equipment, facility space, supplies or other resources used for laboratory purposes.
OR
High school diploma/GED and three (3) years of full-time equivalent laboratory experience such as maintaining equipment, facility space, supplies or other resources used for laboratory purposes.
An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.
Desired Qualifications
A. Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physics, biology, engineering, astronomy or geology
B. One (1) year of direct support experience in a lab/educational setting.
C. Experience with basic lab safety protocols, including safe handling, storage, and correct disposal of hazardous chemicals and materials.
D. Experience with general science lab procedures and operations, including maintaining, troubleshooting and cleaning of laboratory equipment
E. Experience with data collection and analysis probeware (e.g. Vernier, Pasco, IR, GC/MS)
Special Working Conditions
Exposure to chemicals, fumes, particulates and organisms that may present health hazards if not handled according to safety protocols are possible.
May require lifting objects up to 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.
May be required to work at multiple campus locations and work outdoors.
May be required to do purchasing.
Evening and weekend hours may be required.
