About the Position
Under general supervision, the Heavy Equipment Operator performs skilled work of moderate difficulty in the operation of Flood Control District (FCD) heavy equipment to maintain and repair earthen dams, earthen and concrete levees, basins, floodways, channels, and access roads.

High school diploma or GEDThree years of work experience operating trucks and heavy equipmentValid Arizona Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a tanker endorsement issued by the State of ArizonaState and federal regulations require Maricopa County to conduct a pre-employment safety history investigation for all positions that require an applicant to possess a commercial driver's license (CDL). Operate a variety of medium to heavy-sized construction and maintenance equipment / vehicles in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures to perform duties on maintenance projects to construct, repair, and maintain roads on FCD projects and propertiesHaul materials and transport vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks and transportersPre-check, clean, and perform routine maintenance work on heavy equipment; identify and report mechanical problems requiring additional repair. Complete required daily logs and prepare reports; attend safety meetingsOperate equipment and train personnel in the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of heavy construction and maintenance equipment according to standard operating and safety proceduresPerform traffic control activities as needed and other duties as assignedWorking Conditions

This position generally conducts business out in the field utilizing various equipment and hand tools for numerous types of construction and maintenance duties, including shovels, rakes, pickaxes, brooms, and varying-sized electric and hand tools. Familiarization with four-wheel drive capabilities and self-recovery winching techniques will be needed from time to timeProtective Equipment Required
Fieldwork will often be conducted in remote locations under potentially extreme weather environments. Attire for the position will be provided and maintained by Maricopa County and has the potential for General Construction and / or Field Inspection PPE required to perform duties daily.
