About the Position
The Investigator provides critical and often complex administrative, operational, and functional support to the Financial Crimes Unit of the General Crimes Division. This position may interact with the public, inmates, other law enforcement entities, and employees of MCSO. Assignments within the Divisions may include an on-call rotational status. The Investigator maintains compliance with state and federal laws, related rules, regulations, and Office Policy.

Position Qualifications

Education
  • High school diploma or GED.
Experience
  • Three (3) years of related investigative experience.
OR
Combined education and experience qualifications
  • Other combinations of relevant post-secondary education or experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year for year basis.
Other requirements
  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire.
  • Training that may be provided on-the-job: FEMA NIMS – IS100 and 700; Safety; Payroll; PREA.
  • Within six months of hire, must obtain an Arizona Criminal Justice Information (ACJIS) certification and maintain certification. Training is provided on duty.
  • Prior to hiring, the Sheriff's Office requires that all candidates pass a polygraph examination and an extensive background review.
Our Preferred Candidate has
Experience as a fraud investigator for any of the following:
  • Financial institutions (e.g., banks, credit unions) or relevant industries such as insurance, accounting, or auditing.
  • Law enforcement agencies (e.g., police, county/district attorney’s office, state or federal attorney general’s office/department of justice)
Any of the following certifications:
  • Certified Financial Crimes Specialist (CFCS)
  • Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE)
  • Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS)

Essential Job Tasks
(This is not an all-inclusive list of all job duties that may be required; employees will be required to perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Investigates and participates in case investigations within a Unit.
  • Conducts follow-up phone calls, emails, and in-person contacts with members of the public, law enforcement, and various investigative partners.
  • Locates and interviews employees, complainants, and witnesses; obtains and reviews evidence as needed.
  • Prepares complex investigative reports and completes required paperwork, collects and impounds evidence, and other related documentation.
  • Manages assigned caseload, performs case prioritization and conducts follow-up, and maintains case files.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with supervisor on the status of investigations to ensure all cases are reviewed in detail and following compliance requirements.
  • Queries law enforcement databases and maintains law enforcement sensitive information as required by law and Office policy; performs requests for documents and inquiries into Judicial or Executive reports as necessary.
  • Provides information that factually represents the findings of investigations.
  • Comprehends and maintains a strong working knowledge of applicable criminal law, Office policies, procedures, and Court Orders; understands the implications of new information.
  • Prepares cases for prosecution and testifies in Judicial processes as required.
  • Maintains all County issued equipment.
  • Travels offsite for investigative or administrative purposes.
  • Completes annual and mandatory training as specified in Office policy.
  • Attends training classes in investigative methods, investigative trends, and subjects related to assigned area.
  • Performs other duties and functions as directed by supervisor; assists other units/divisions as necessary.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
