Pay Range

$25.10 - $40.50 hourly

Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

** Please note that the hourly rate listed ($25.10 - $40.50) is for candidates who are Registered Sanitarians. The hourly rate for non-registered candidates is $22.45.

As an Environmental Health Specialist, you will conduct compliance reviews and field inspections safeguarding public health sanitation codes. You will be mainly assigned to the specialized area of drinking water quality but may occasionally support aquatic health, safety, and onsite wastewater.

We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental health, microbiology, entomology, chemistry, food science, or a related field with 30 semester hours of natural, physical, or applied science coursework

  • Registered sanitarian in good standing with the Arizona Department of Health Services at time of hire or within one year of hire date. Please review the criteria to qualify for the Registered Sanitarian examination athttps://bit.ly/3LrR2b8

  • An Arizona driver's license is required to start working. Out-of-state applicants are welcome to apply but must obtain an Arizona driver's license at the time of hire.

Job Contributions

  • Performs routine operation & maintenance inspections and Sanitary Surveys, and reviews and comments on Emergency Operation Plans, Stage 2 Disinfection Byproduct Plans, and Microbiological Site Sampling Plans to ensure public water systems are in compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Regulations.

  • Provides technical guidance to Public Water Systems to ensure Code of Federal Regulations, Maricopa County Environmental Health Code, Arizona Revised Statutes, and Arizona Administrative Codes are followed. Much of this work is conducted on a computer or over the phone.

  • Receive and provide cross-training and contribute across all Water and Waste Management Division Programs to include the Treatment Program (treatment plant plan review and inspection), the Subdivision Program (water/wastewater infrastructure), the Aquatics/Pool Program (commercial/public pool plan review), the Drinking Water Program (sanitary surveys of public water systems), and the On-Site Septic Program (on-site septic system plan review).

  • Reviews New Source Approval (NSA) applications, conducts NSA inspections for compliance.

  • Review Consumer Confidence Reports (CCR)submitted by public water systems. Communicate with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality on the status of the CCR.

  • Review Arizona Department of Environmental Quality reports on compliance monitoring of public monitoring systems. This includes responding to emergencies, missed monitoring violations, public notices, and maximum contaminant level exceedances.

  • Attends and participates in professional meetings, conferences, and other environmental program related functions.

  • Drives a personal or county vehicle or provides for appropriate transportation to various work-related sites

  • Respond to public water system complaints as needed.

Working Conditions

  • Work will occur in an office and field environment; may be exposed to outdoor climate conditions and indoor commercial environments that are sometimes wet, unsanitary, and hot

  • Must be able to operate a vehicle, including light trucks, for travel to inspection sites, which may sometimes be in remote areas

  • Ability to bend, reach, twist, kneel, climb, and stoop

  • May be subject to working after hours, weekends, and holidays

  • Ability to lift floor to shoulder and shoulder to waist up to 30 pounds; carry, push or pull up to 30 pounds for a distance of 50 feet

  • Have passed the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) Registered Environmental Health professional exam with a score of 650 or greater and obtain reciprocity from the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) within six months of hire date

  • Protective clothing (i.e. hard hat, steel toes shoes) is necessary for some environments
