Under general supervision, the Heavy Equipment Operator performs skilled work of moderate difficulty in the operation of Flood Control District (FCD) heavy equipment to maintain and repair earthen dams, earthen and concrete levees, basins, floodways, channels, and access roads.

We Require
High school diploma or GED
Three years of work experience operating trucks and heavy equipment
Valid Arizona Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a tanker endorsement issued by the State of Arizona
State and federal regulations require Maricopa County to conduct a pre-employment safety history investigation for all positions that require an applicant to possess a commercial driver's license (CDL). Maricopa County must also conduct a pre-employment safety history investigation for positions that directly impact commercial motor vehicle safety but which may not specifically require a valid CDL
A post-offer drug screen is required for this position
We Also Value
Experience with safe and efficient operation and maintenance of heavy construction and maintenance equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures
Experience with flood control structures, road construction, maintenance, and repair methods and materials and techniques of dust and noise control
Experience with any of the following equipment: Scraper, 8,000-gallon Water Wagon, D-6 and above Dozers, and mid-to large-size Excavators
Knowledge of dust abatement techniques to comply with Maricopa County Air Quality Department's Rule 310
Job Contributions
Operate a variety of medium to heavy-sized construction and maintenance equipment/vehicles in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures to perform duties on maintenance projects to construct, repair, and maintain roads on FCD projects and properties
Haul materials and transport vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks and transporters
Pre-check, clean, and perform routine maintenance work on heavy equipment; identify and report mechanical problems requiring additional repair. Complete required daily logs and prepare reports; attend safety meetings
Operate equipment and train personnel in the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of heavy construction and maintenance equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures
Perform traffic control activities as needed and other duties as assigned
Working Conditions
Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly
Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration
Incumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel
The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties and responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software, and Hardware
This position generally conducts business out in the field utilizing various equipment and hand tools for numerous types of construction and maintenance duties, including shovels, rakes, pickaxes, brooms, and varying-sized electric and hand tools. Familiarization with four-wheel drive capabilities and self-recovery winching techniques will be needed from time to time
Protective Equipment Required
Fieldwork will often be conducted in remote locations under potentially extreme weather environments. Attire for the position will be provided and maintained by Maricopa County and has the potential for General Construction and/or Field Inspection PPE required to perform duties daily. This includes but is not limited to safety-toe footwear, hard hats, high visibility vests, eye protection, and durable pants such as jeans
