We Require
High school diploma or GED
Five years of criminal investigative experience
Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license upon hire, have and maintain an acceptable driving record, and be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely

Job Contributions
Supervise and manage the performance of a group of defender investigators; Evaluate, hire, train, and provide ongoing professional development for defender investigators
Collaborate with the Director, Deputy Director, and Administrator to develop investigator programs that further the goals of the leadership team and align with the client-centered mission of the department
Prioritize caseloads, assign cases, and monitor the progress of investigations to ensure timely completion
Maintain an active caseload of complex and highly sensitive cases, including maintaining case files and case logs
Identify, locate, and interview witnesses, assess credibility, and obtain statements; conduct field investigations, including crime scene analysis and evidence collection
Collaborate with attorneys to develop effective defense strategies and case theories
Review case documentation and recommend securing additional background information that may be needed for the case
Prepare comprehensive investigative reports detailing findings and conclusions
Liaison with law enforcement, experts, and other criminal justice agencies as needed
Testify in court
Present trainings and updates to employees and stakeholders and periodically represent the department as a leader during meetings
Working Conditions
This position may include exposure to traumatic subject matter (crime scenes, accidents, etc.). Accuracy, decision-making, and concentration/vigilance may be constant occurrences. Interruptions, time pressures, high work volume, handling multiple or complicated tasks, unscheduled tasks, frequently changing tasks, teamwork, working in close physical proximity with others, and public contact may be frequent occurrences
Travel to and from court locations, government facilities, and other job-related locations as necessary, which may include periodic travel outside of Maricopa County, subject to County policies regarding vehicle use
