Job Summary:
The Educational Interpreter will facilitate equivalent access for deaf/hard of hearing students in the various communication exchanges that occur in all school related activities. The Interpreter ascertains goals of each educational setting and communicates information clearly in the student's language. Equally important, the interpreter communicates the student’s language in spoken English for staff and students. Educational interpreters promote and support the greatest possible level of participation and independence for students in educational settings.
Major Responsibilities:
- Interprets classroom lectures, discussion, and assessments for Deaf or Hard of Hearing students into American Sign Language (ASL).
- Provides voicing for signing Deaf or Hard of Hearing students.
- Participates as a team member in the IEP process and should familiarize themselves with student IEP goals and objectives; assists with data collection; implements accommodations, modifications and supportive aids and services as prescribed in the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
- Provides orientation regarding Deafness, interpreter roles, and special equipment to hearing students and staff.
- As student navigates throughout his/her school day, accompanies student to translates spoken language to ASL and provide voice to ASL. Accompany and assist assigned student on field trips and co-curricular activities held during the school day, assemblies, etc.
- Works collaboratively with classroom staff by reinforcing instruction and implementing behavioral supports and interventions; including de-escalation strategies.
- Assists the classroom teacher so long as that assistance does not compromise the interpreter’s role as an interpreter for the student who is deaf or hard of hearing.
- Serves as a language role model to teachers and students who are deaf or hard of hearing; may include provision of instruction in sign language to teachers and students. 9. Maintains confidentiality of information regarding students and their program.

Qualifications:
Education and Certification/Licensure:
- Valid certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or pass the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) at level 3.5 or higher within five (5) years preceding the date of application and hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in any field from a GaPSC-accepted, accredited institution of higher education
- If the applicant is applying for licensure with the EIPA and does not meet the degree requirement, the initial five (5) year license will be issued and the degree requirement must be met for renewal.
OR
- Non-Renewable Licensure Requirements:
- If the applicant does not hold a valid certification through the RID or pass the EIPA at level 3.5 or higher, a one (1) year Non-Renewable license in this field may be issued at the request of a Marietta City Schools
- If the applicant does not meet renewal requirements, a one (1) year Non-Renewable license may be requested by Marietta City Schools to allow time for completion of renewal requirements.
Experience:
- Experience with children with disabilities preferred.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
- Written and oral communication; ability to interpret/transliterate (sign and voice) at a normal conversational rate
- Ability to communicate effectively through American Sign Language Experience with implementing and adhering to student IEP’s.
- Ability to work cooperatively with school personnel, parents, students, and community members
- Ability to be patient and flexible in work assignments
- Ability to positively follow the directions and instructions of the teacher
- Ability to relate positively to children with disabilities

Physical Demands:
Vision, hearing, verbal and written communication are essential factors in performing required tasks, duties, and responsibilities. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Frequent movement from classroom to classroom and driving from school building to school building is required. Must be able to lift a minimum of 30 pounds, stand and walk for long periods of time. Must have flexibility in hours worked. De-escalation strategies may include physical management techniques.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment varies depending on the classroom noise level. The employee may face many interruptions and shifting priorities day to day. Working with specific students may require Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training. The employee is directly responsible for the safety and well-being of assigned student(s).
The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with the public and other staff. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work out-put of students.
