The Dorm Resident Teaching Assistants (RA) will work with the SES Director and instructors and assist with the preparation for lab and field work associated with the SES core courses and electives. The period of employment runs from August 25, 2025–December 19, 2025.

SES TA DUTIES: Working with the SES Director and other instructors assisting with preparation for and supervision of lab and fieldwork associated with the SES Core Courses, elective courses, Microbial Methods and Methods and Concepts in Oceanography, as well as independent project research. Specific duties include but are not limited to: assisting in removal from storage, uncrating and setting up of equipment and supplies required for the SES courses one week prior to the start of the course; assisting in the set-up of various lab and field exercises for the core courses, helping supervise students with chemical and laboratory analyses as needed; helping students with data analysis and calculations, assisting students with field work; helping students with lab reports and editing; and maintaining an orderly laboratory.

Dorm Resident Responsibilities: The Dorm Resident TAs will reside in the MBL dormitory and be available to counsel students during non-course hours (evenings/weekends) as necessary. The Dorm Resident TAs acts as a role model by abiding by personally, and upholding MBL policies and Code of Conduct, as stated in Student Handbook. The Dorm Resident TAs educates students about MBL Policies and Procedures and collaborates with the course director and student services on violations to policies. She/He helps to communicate concerns students have to course director and student services. There will be two Dorm Resident TA’s sharing responsibilities and duties.

The individual will participate in several weekend field trips and perform other duties off-hours as required or assigned.

EDUCATION/SKILL/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, geoscience or environmental science is required. Applicant should have a basic understanding of ecology, fundamentals of nutrient cycling, and biogeochemical processes. Must have experience with standard field and laboratory techniques used in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems science such as sampling of plankton, forest and grassland communities, nekton and benthic invertebrates and sediments and soils. Familiarity with techniques of measuring chlorophyll, estimating plant and algal biomass and productivity, and measuring nutrients valuable. Must have familiarity with personal computers; experience with Windows, MS Word and Excel. Prior experience in working with overseeing or supervising college age students is desirable. Should have a valid driver’s license and feel comfortable driving a large van or small truck. Knowledge of boating safety, ability to pilot small boats or willingness to learn is essential.

Physical Requirements: Position will require some lifting, bending, stretching, and reaching. Work will also take place in a both outdoor field sites and a lab environment, with potential exposure to chemical and/or biological agents. Position will necessitate periods of standing, sitting, and/or walking.
