Job Duties
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Making dockside and field visits to observe and record biological data, commercial catch and effort information, and conducting interviews with harvesters and dealers to determine locations, magnitudes, and species compositions of commercial landings.
- Performs field sampling, collection, and compilation of data, for fish population analysis and stock assessment. Field sampling includes length and weight measurements of finfish and crustaceans, sex and maturity stage determinations, and collection of hard parts for finfish ageing (scales, otoliths, spines, or operculum).
- Requires frequent travel between the office and field using an assigned Agency owned
- Must complete all training prior to initiation of field work, including state vehicle safety
- Must maintain a good rapport with the public and foster working relationships with commercial watermen
- This position will work with multiple automated systems including agency specific database management software and the full suite of Microsoft products.
- It is also the duty of this position to be fully aware of Agency protocol regarding data
- This position will also be called upon to assist with the Marine Sportfish Collection Project, a freezer-based recreational sampling program, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with a diverse constituency of commercial watermen, seafood wholesalers, and recreational fisheries.
- Must possess knowledge of or be capable of learning and retaining knowledge of commercial and recreational marine species, harvest seasons, landing areas, business locations, and markets.
- Must possess the ability to tally, collate, summarize, and report on a large volume of data collection.
- Knowledge of data management software and automated systems.
- Must be willing to travel and work a flexible schedule including occasional weekends and evenings.
- Successful candidate must be eligible for a valid Virginia driver's license.
Additional Considerations
- High School education or the equivalent with courses in marine science or biology.
- Experience performing field sampling techniques in both random and fixed survey designs for marine species is preferred.
- Education on technology and database management is considered beneficial.
- Experience with data entry systems, database structure, and data manipulation is also
