The Fisheries Management Technician is one of three primary sampling technicians for the Virginia Marine Resources Commission Biological Sampling Program. This program collects biological information from commercial and recreational marine fisheries harvest for the purpose of fish population analysis and stock assessment. The advertised position will primarily focus their efforts on the commercial fisheries operating on the Eastern shore of Virginia and Virginia Beach. This is a highly independent position that requires very clear communication with supervisors and fellow field technicians. This program works very closely with the VMRC Age and Growth Lab, where collected data and fish aging structures are further processed for their inclusion in the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) species stock assessments. Primarily, the position will work to collect samples from up to 15 species of finfish based on goals outlined by Age and Growth Lab staff. Considering the complex relationships between Agency, State, and Federal partners involved in this work, there is strong emphasis on this position for accuracy, database management skills, and communication.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Making dockside and field visits to observe and record biological data, commercial catch and effort information, and conducting interviews with harvesters and dealers to determine locations, magnitudes, and species compositions of commercial landings.
  • Performs field sampling, collection, and compilation of data, for fish population analysis and stock assessment. Field sampling includes length and weight measurements of finfish and crustaceans, sex and maturity stage determinations, and collection of hard parts for finfish ageing (scales, otoliths, spines, or operculum).
  • Requires frequent travel between the office and field using an assigned Agency owned
vehicle (AOV).
  • Must complete all training prior to initiation of field work, including state vehicle safety
training, data collection training, and database management overviews.
  • Must maintain a good rapport with the public and foster working relationships with commercial watermen
  • This position will work with multiple automated systems including agency specific database management software and the full suite of Microsoft products.
  • It is also the duty of this position to be fully aware of Agency protocol regarding data
confidentiality and always adhere to these protocols regarding the data they’ve collected at any stage of the process.
  • This position will also be called upon to assist with the Marine Sportfish Collection Project, a freezer-based recreational sampling program, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with a diverse constituency of commercial watermen, seafood wholesalers, and recreational fisheries.
  • Must possess knowledge of or be capable of learning and retaining knowledge of commercial and recreational marine species, harvest seasons, landing areas, business locations, and markets.
  • Must possess the ability to tally, collate, summarize, and report on a large volume of data collection.
  • Knowledge of data management software and automated systems.
  • Must be willing to travel and work a flexible schedule including occasional weekends and evenings.
  • Successful candidate must be eligible for a valid Virginia driver's license.

Additional Considerations

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:
  • High School education or the equivalent with courses in marine science or biology.
  • Experience performing field sampling techniques in both random and fixed survey designs for marine species is preferred.
