Job Description Summary
Completes abstracts (case summaries) for submission to the California Cancer Registry and the National Cancer Data Base. Assists in performing Studies of Quality and Annual Report preparation for the Commission on Cancer survey. Performs case-finding and quality control of all reportable neoplasms. Assists in special projects as required.
Job Requirements, Prerequisites And Essential Functions
EDUCATION REQUIRED: Certified Tumor Registrar Associate degree in Health/Biology or related field. A Bachelor’s degree in Health/Biology preferred. EXPERIENCE Five years experience working in a hospital or centralized cancer registry. Prior experience in the development and completion of computer database reports. LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS Certified Tumor Registrar Required at hire PREREQUISITE SKILLS 1. Knowledge of Federal Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) regulations, the State of California Cancer Registry, Department of Health Services Cancer Surveillance Section Laws, the Regional regulatory agencies mandates and the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer program accreditation rules and regulations. 2. Extensive knowledge of principals of cancer registry operation, tumor nomenclature and classification systems with strong medical background in cancer disease process. 3. Knowledge of computerized database analysis, data processing and database applications, including CNExT. 4. Ability to work tactfully and effectively with patients, hospital staff and the public. 5. Demonstrated organizational skills in directing own work and others. 6. Effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communications skills. 7. Ability to abstract cancer cases without supervision and maintain at least 98% accuracy rate. 8. Maintain in good standing, CEU’s with National Cancer Registrars Association. 9. In absence of Department Manager, can oversee the day to day operations of the department.
