This is a responsible position requiring independent judgment and the ability to work independently without constant supervision. This position is the primary point for receiving, tagging and tracking all capital asset purchases for the Marion County Sheriff's Office. It requires accurate record keeping and organization. It involves physical activity such as lifting heavy objects, bending and stooping, data entry and accounting activities involving the monthly and year-end capital asset balancing reports.

A. Abide by the "Law Enforcement Code of Ethics". 

B. Assist the Purchasing/Property Control Director by solving routine problems and by bringing unusual problems and administrative matters to the attention of the Director. 

C. Receive all items designated as capital asset purchases. 

D. Generate barcode property labels and affix to item(s) designated as capital assets. 

E. Remove from active inventory all surplus or obsolete capital asset items. 

F. Maintain accurate records and files necessary to balance the monthly and year-end capital asset reports. 

G. Balance monthly and year-end capital asset reports. 

H. Conduct and reconcile the yearly physical inventory of all capital asset items. 

I. Generate all reports necessary for auditors. 

J. Perform warehouse duties as necessary as a back-up warehouseman in the absence of the warehouse specialist. 

K. Remain alert for conditions or situations which inhibit efficient operation of the Agency, or of the Purchasing Division, and make recommendations for solutions. 

L. Perform any other duties which may be required by the Sheriff, Chief Deputy, Bureau Chief or Purchasing/Property Control Director, or through necessity of situations.

JOB PREREQUISITES:

 
  • High school diploma or GED
     
  • A minimum of two years' experience working in a property control position.
     
  • Ability to perform general office skills and type a minimum of 35 correct words per minute.
     
  • Ability to work harmoniously with other Agency employees.
     
  • Ability to follow instructions and organize own work with minimal supervision.
     
  • Ability to make independent decisions.
     
  • Ability to use a computer for data entry.
     
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
     
  • Ability to operate a barcode program.

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Considerable knowledge of property control methods and procedures.
Working knowledge of purchasing and accounting methods, and procedures as they relate to property control.
Computer skills and the ability to work with a bar coding program.WORKING CONDITIONS: Indoor and outdoor environments. Involves physical activity such as lifting heavy objects, bending, and stooping, especially when conducting the physical inventory of capital asset items. The job functions are performed during normal daytime hours, from 8:00A.M. to 5:00P.M., however, some overtime may be required. Data entry work is performed at a desk using a computer. 

ADA: Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert medium to heavy physical effort in performing work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 65 pounds). Ability to talk, hear, see, walk, handle, feel and grasp, write and type. 

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, textures, and colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination such as matching or differentiating between objects. 

Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dust, odors, wetness, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, bright/dim light, heights, traffic hazards, and/or toxic/poisonous agents.
