POSITION SUMMARY

Provide academic advising and coaching for an assigned caseload of students; help students develop academic plans and register for classes, and make referrals to appropriate campus and community resources to help to increase student success rate as outlined with department goals, strategic plan, and advances of the mission of Marion Technical College (the "College").

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop a thorough knowledge of College academic program requirements and curriculums, admission criteria, courses, financial aid processes, course transferability, and other internal and external student services. Effectively communicate information and relate to students.
  • Provide academic advising to traditional and non-traditional students for successful course, goal, or degree completion, with a primary focus on students in the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science programs as well as students in technical programs intending to transfer to bachelor’s degree programs and transient / non-degree students taking individual courses for transfer. Advise students on matters of curriculum, course and degree requirements, placement, career exploration, registration, graduation, and transfer options, and make referrals to campus resources as appropriate. Maintain accurate advising records.
  • Assist students with academic planning and registration. Develop individualized academic plans using My Plan (Watermark Student Success and Engagement). Contact advisees each semester to register and plan for upcoming terms, making adjustments as needed. Work with the College Registrar to perform degree audits for assigned advisees who petition to graduate to ensure all degree requirements have been met.
  • Monitor advisees’ academic progress and offer encouragement and support. Congratulate students who are staying on target and intervene with students who are not reaching their academic goals. Perform outreach to students who receive an early alert for academic or personal concerns, attendance, or midterm grade reports. Coach advisees on academic warning or probation. Develop tailored academic success plans and monitor progress to help them return to good academic standing and complete academic goals and / or degree program.
  • Assist with new student onboarding (new student and transfer) by providing information on academic programs, selective program admission, financial aid, and referrals to campus resources, etc. Provide career advising to undecided students to help students select a pathway. Work collaboratively with the Admissions Office, College Credit Plus (CCP), and RPEDS Pathway Advisor to support recruitment and matriculation of graduating CCP students and ensure a seamless transition from high school / CCP to enrolling as a general MTC student.
  • Support students experiencing academic and personal issues and concerns. Assess students for non-academic risk factors and identify barriers to academic retention and completion. Make referrals to appropriate student services office or external agencies for additional support. Work with other offices on behalf of students to facilitate problem resolution and empower students to advocate for themselves.
  • Serve as the primary transfer advisor for the college, assisting students with exploring transfer options that align with their academic interests and career goals, selecting appropriate transferable coursework, applying to transfer institutions, addressing questions about the transfer matriculation process, transfer scholarships, etc. Maintain a strong working knowledge of Ohio Guaranteed Transfer Pathways (OGTP) and MTC institutional transfer partner programs, but also use appropriate resources to help students identify other options as desired.
  • Stay current on changes occurring at the Ohio Department of Higher Education as it pertains to transfer and general education. Attend Ohio Articulation and Transfer Network and Ohio Transfer Council meetings. Maintain a strong working knowledge of the Ohio Transfer 36 (OT36), Transfer Assurance Guides (TAG), Career-Technical Assurance Guides (CTAG), and Ohio Guaranteed Transfer Pathways (OGTP).
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Advising (Transfer Coordinator) with developing and maintaining transfer pathway degree maps (2 2, 3 1) for partner programs on an annual basis.
  • Assist with implementation of new student orientation and participate in campus events such as admissions and recruitment events, career fairs, student engagement activities, and related events as needed. Attend on- or off-campus College meetings and serve on departmental and College committees as assigned by the supervisor. Attend community functions which may require creating and presenting information on the College programs to a wide range of constituents.
  • Utilize College information systems, including PowerCampus, Watermark Student Success and Engagement, and Accudemia to validate student data, update student files and information, and manage appointments and other contacts. Maintain user proficiency for software programs, systems, and databases used by the College.
  • Create and pursue a plan for professional development opportunities within the scope of work responsibilities, department, and College objectives. Participate in training as required by the College and / or supervisor. Demonstrate self-motivation and ability to research and continually update knowledge and skills. Provide input and accept additional and changing work responsibilities based on department needs.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, College employees and customers while maintaining standards of confidentiality and privacy, in a timely manner. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the College, FERPA, student records, and any other protected documentation.
  • ADDITIO N AL INFORMATION

    This full-time position is fully grant-funded through September 30, 2028, through the Rural Postsecondary Education and Economic Development (RPED) grant. The position may be funded beyond the grant funding through enrollment growth in the program.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university required. Master's degree in higher education, college student personnel, education, counseling, social work or related field preferred. Experience in academic advising, student services, counseling, or related required. Previous experience in higher education highly desired. Knowledge of guided pathways, holistic student supports, appreciative advising, transfer advising, and the transfer student experience desirable. Must have strong communication skills including writing, interpersonal, and presentation skills. Demonstrate ability to work in a team environment but also to work independently and complete projects with minimal direction and oversight. Proficiency in Microsoft® Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) with excellent computer and related technology skills required. Willingness to work an irregular schedule as assigned. Ability to successfully pass a background check, prior to and after employment. Valid driver’s license or dependable transportation required.

    ADA SPECIFICATIONS

    This position is classified, as Staff will perform a wide range of professional and administrative support functions for the College, primarily in an office setting. Further information may be obtained from the Office of Human Resources.
