POSITION SUMMARY
To provide proactive academic support to students and maintain accurate tutoring records under the direction of the Assistant Director of Testing and Tutoring.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Proactively contact struggling students according to early alert systems. Respond to inquiries from students and College employees in a timely manner while maintaining standards of confidentiality and privacy in accordance with the College, FERPA, student records, and any other protected documentation policies.
- Deliver personalized instruction and compassionate support in one-on-one and/or small group settings in both in-person and virtual formats for approved courses using a variety of teaching methods in accordance with the course objectives, course syllabus, faculty, and other College and program requirements.
- Assist students with academic tasks and assignments such as homework, papers, projects, research, and test preparation. Teach study skills, note-taking skills, test-taking strategies and other academic skills as appropriate.
- Adjust teaching approach to meet students’ level of understanding and unique learning needs.
- Built trust by providing a safe, respectful, and encouraging space where students feel comfortable discussing their academic challenges.
- Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing student records, course syllabi, or other relevant materials. Request and secure relevant materials and resources, as needed.
- Enter tutoring session notes in a timely manner and maintain accurate records using tutor tracking software.
- Maintain an up-to-date schedule in tutoring appointment system, and communicate with management about changes to your weekly availability. Ensure timecards are completed appropriately and submitted on time.
- Maintain user proficiency for software programs, systems, and databases used by the College.
- Attend training as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to developing instructional and academic support aids, maintaining tutoring center bulletin boards, assisting with marketing and outreach, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS
Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university required. Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred. Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds in 1:1 and group settings required. Previous teaching or tutoring experience highly desired. High need courses include statistics, college algebra, anatomy & physiology, and computer applications. Demonstrated knowledge and competence in the subject matter; tutors must have earned an “A” or “B” in the courses they are tutoring. Specialized industry expertise or certifications will be considered in lieu of college coursework for technical courses. Demonstrated ability to empathize and provide authentic, positive support to others required. Official college transcripts will be required upon hire.
Exhibit excellent English verbal and written communication skills. Ability to confidentially maintain detailed records in accordance with FERPA. Strong time management and organizational skills required. Strong computer and related technology skills required, including proficiency in Microsoft® Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and Zoom, Teams, or similar web-conferencing software and ability to learn new software programs quickly. Demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal direction and oversight and maintain a professional and ethical work environment. Any combination of work experience, training, and/or education equivalent may be accepted.
Willingness to work an irregular schedule as assigned. Flexibility to work day and evening hours desired. Tutors may work up to 29 hours per week, but hours are not guaranteed on a weekly basis – subject to student demand and College needs.
Candidate must successfully pass a background check, prior to and after employment. Valid driver’s license or dependable transportation required.
Pay dependent on degree and prior teaching or tutoring experience:
- Associate degree: $15-17/hr
- Bachelor’s degree: $17-20/hr
- Master’s degree: $20-22/hr
