Controller Job Description

Position Overview: The Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of an organization. This position involves managing the financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations. The Controller will collaborate closely with the executive team, department heads, and external auditors to provide accurate and timely financial information for decision-making and strategic planning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting:
    • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
    • Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and other financial documentation.
    • Review and analyze financial data to identify trends, discrepancies, or areas of concern.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting:
    • Lead the annual budgeting process, working closely with department heads to develop realistic and accurate budgets.
    • Prepare financial forecasts to assess future business performance, including cash flow projections and variance analysis.
    • Monitor actual performance against budgeted figures and provide insights into financial performance.
  • Internal Controls & Compliance:
    • Design, implement, and enforce internal control policies and procedures to safeguard assets and ensure financial accuracy.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., tax laws, financial reporting requirements).
    • Coordinate the preparation of schedules and documentation for external audits and manage the audit process.
  • Cash Flow & Treasury Management:
    • Oversee the company’s cash management processes, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and working capital management.
    • Ensure that sufficient cash flow is available to meet operational needs, including payroll, vendor payments, and other financial obligations.
    • Optimize cash flow by forecasting and managing liquidity.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Manage and mentor accounting and finance staff, providing guidance and professional development.
    • Delegate tasks and responsibilities effectively to ensure timely completion of financial processes.
    • Foster a collaborative and efficient work environment within the finance department.
  • Strategic Planning & Analysis:
    • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support business strategy and decision-making.
    • Work with senior management to assess financial implications of potential investments, acquisitions, and other business opportunities.
    • Monitor financial performance and identify areas for cost optimization and process improvements.
Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Experience: At least 5–7 years of experience in accounting or finance, with a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, or SAP), advanced Excel skills, and familiarity with financial reporting standards.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Attention to Detail: Exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail to ensure financial accuracy and compliance.

Work Environment

  • Full-time position, typically in an office setting with occasional remote work options.
  • Occasional overtime required during financial reporting periods or audits.
