DEFINITION

Reserve Firefighter I  

Under the supervision of Mariposa County Fire Command and Control Cal Fire Staff, a Reserve Firefighter I performs routine general maintenance and cleaning of fire stations, buildings and grounds to maintain compliance of local and state codes and ordinances; cleans, maintains and tests emergency equipment and apparatus; assists Fire Prevention Specialist I/II with public education and inspections; works in the Mariposa County Service Center as needed; and responds to rescue calls within two minutes during the day and three minutes in the evening performing firefighting duties, including combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; provides medical assistance, and does other related work as directed such as recruitment projects and public promotion/education of Mariposa County Fire Department.

-Enforces pertinent fire codes, ordinances, laws and regulations with impartiality and efficiency. 

-Uses organization skills and has ability to learn various programs such as Service Center, Ladder Testing, Pump Testing, and SCBA flow testing. 

-The work requires an understanding of lifesaving and firefighting methods gained through a program of specialized training and  experience. Duties may involve considerable physical exertion and potential risk to health and emergency readiness while wearing heavy protective equipment and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus. A self-starter who is highly motivated to perform the required duties with a high standard and ethics is required.

Receives direction from the Command and Control Agreement with CalFire


EXAMPLES OF Essential Functions

-Performs general maintenance and minor repair work as comfortable and knowledgeable to County Fire Stations including painting interiors and exteriors, cleaning of windows, cleaning of floors, windowsills, baseboards, shelves, countertops, and all other surfaces.


-Completes custodial duties as assigned.


-Repairs  water lines.


-Maintains grounds of County Fire Stations including sweeping, weed eating, weeding, pruning, watering, mowing, trimming, fertilizing, spraying of weed control chemicals, and maintaining irrigation systems. 


- Uses safe procedures, methods, tools and equipment used in general maintenance work. 


-Trouble shoots and make minor repairs as comfortable and knowledgeable of tools and equipment used in general maintenance and custodial work. 


-Works with and assists Fire Prevention Inspector I/II with general public to conduct fire safety presentations and provides information regarding fire prevention and life safety. 


-Inspects a variety of structures and facilities ensuring compliance with all State and local fire codes. 


-Assists in weed abatement, brush and combustible vegetation clearance inspections accordance to PRC 4291 and local ordinances.

 

-Responds to emergency calls, fire alarms and non-emergency calls to perform arduous work as a member of a fire company.


-Operates radio and illumination generators. 


-Administers first aid.


-Lays and connects hose lines, moves charged hose lines, holds nozzles and directs water streams.


-Carries, raises and climbs ladders.


-Enters burning buildings to remove persons from danger or as a coordinated strategy/tactic to prevent further fire damage.


-Performs salvage and overhaul tactics as directed. 


-Uses chemical extinguishers, axes, hooks, lines, power-driven tools, cutting torches and other equipment. 

 

 -Ventilates by breaching walls or roofs inside/outside and on top of buildings to release heat and smoke. 


-Places salvage covers to prevent damage. 


-Overhauls and cleans up after a fire to prevent rekindling. 


-Checks fire scene for point of origin and source of ignition and preserves evidence which may indicate arson or cause of fire. 


-Returns company equipment to its proper place before leaving the emergency scene. 


-Participates in drills and training sessions. 


-Compiles and submits information on equivalent runs, accidents, and fire inspections. 

 Must be available for on-call emergency response.

Experience:   

Experience as a volunteer or paid Firefighter is preferred but not required. 

Training to obtain the necessary skills to perform the duties of a Reserve Firefighter I for Mariposa County Fire will be provided.

Education: 

High School Diploma, or equivalent

Licenses/Certificates

-Valid California driver's license. Under certain circumstances, the Human Resources Director may accept a valid driver's license from another State if applicant acknowledges his/her intent to acquire a California driver's license within three months by signing an acknowledgement form. 

-Ability to obtain within six (6) months and then to maintain throughout employment: Title 22-compliant Public Safety-First Aid and CPR certification or higher. 

-Ability to obtain within six (6) months: Completion of Department Fire Academy or equivalent 

Ability, Firefighter task book, and maintenance of all relevant/required training in accordance to SOG/Policy 2.5.5.

-Rescue tools and techniques, radiological instrumentation, structural firefighting procedures, salvage, overhaul, ventilation, ropes and knots, and hazardous materials. 

- The buildings and streets within station boundaries. 

-First aid treatment of injuries and burns.

Ability to: 

-Visualize how mechanical things work and understand the inter-relationship of parts.

-Remember and learn from oral instruction

-Comprehend and learn from written material and follow written instructions. 

-Read maps, diagrams and plans.

-Keep records and complete forms

-Analyze situations quickly and reach sound conclusions

-Perform work activities which require endurance, balance, coordination, arm and shoulder strength, leg and back strength

-Learn the terminology and procedures used in the fire service.

-Work in a hazardous environment and risk personal safety if necessary.

-Learn and study on one's own time

-Operate a variety of hand and power tools.

-Identify potential fire hazards.

-Perform company evolutions, read records and pre-fire planning forms. 

Typical Working Conditions

Work is typically performed in stressful and dangerous conditions including extreme heat or cold,  extreme noise, the outdoors or confining workspaces. Work environment will include electrical and/or mechanical hazards, extreme vibrations, toxic chemicals, dust and waste, and explosive materials. 


Typical Physical Requirements

-Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, drive, and lift 70 pounds.

-Ability to withstand the typical working conditions stated above

-Candidates for Firefighter will be required to meet the medical and physical standards as prescribed by county policy and the department physician in accordance with policy 2.3.3. 


THE SELECTION PROCESS 

All interested applicants must complete and submit a job application including any required supplemental questionnaires, and attach any required documentation. For those who meet the minimum qualifications, a competitive evaluation of the training and experience described on your application or supplemental questionnaire, a written examination, a structured oral interview, a performance rating, or a combination of any of these, may be performed. You will be scored based on that competitive evaluation. This process may be altered if there are ten or less applicants that qualified.
