Mariposa Parks and Recreation is hiring Swim Instructors (Extra Help Only) for the summer recreation program.

DEFINITION
To provide swimming instruction through summer programs of the Parks and Recreation Division; instruct people of all ages in pool safety rules and procedures, both inside and outside the pool area; help people develop safe practices around water; provide instruction in a logical progression for rapid aquatic skill development including instruction of topics such as Water Safety for Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim Levels 1-6, Adult Swim, Aqua Fitness for all ages, Basic Water Safety, Emergency Water Safety, and Swim Instructor Aide.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Parks and Recreation Manager.EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides swimming and water safety instructions for aquatic skill development at progressive course levels.
Gives instructions on pool safety rules and procedures inside and outside the immediate pool areas.
Maintains accurate attendance records of all classes held.
Acts in a lead capacity as necessary to oversee aquatics programs conducted at County facilities outside the Mariposa town area.
Maintains a safe environment in accordance with swimming pool safety rules and procedures.
Performs light cashiering duties, including operating a cash register or using a cash box, receiving money, making changes, and receiving class funds.
Assists in the training, assignment, and work monitoring for other summer pool employees.
Assists in maintaining the swimming pool, attendant equipment, and use of chemicals.
Explains programs and activities to participants, parents, and the public.
Supervises program participants to maintain safety, order, and discipline.
Performs related duties as required.EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is:
moderate to advanced swimming ability, or any combination of training and experience that would demonstrate the desired knowledge and abilities of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Competitive swimming experience.
Lifeguard experience.
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.
Possession of a valid, completed within two (2) years, CPR/AED and First Aid training certificate equivalent to current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) standards.
Additional Requirements:
Completion of in-house training equivalent to the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification, including demonstrating proficiency in basic life-saving techniques, CPR/AED, and First Aid proficiency, before conducting swimming instruction.
Individuals without a valid CPR/AED and First Aid training certificate at the time of hire will be as described in Preferred Qualifications; Mariposa County will provide the training before performing assigned work. (Must attach documentation from Mariposa Parks and Recreation to application to qualify using this method)
Possess a valid California driver’s license or reliable transportation to and from assigned work areas. Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years of age.EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

The safe use and storage of cleaning materials, chemicals, and equipment used in pool maintenance and general custodial work.

Perform water safety training instruction.
Train, direct, and monitor swim lesson classes and the work of other summer pool employees.
React quickly and calmly to pool emergencies. Perform mathematical calculations and make change accurately.
Use cleaning materials and chemicals safely and efficiently.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted while performing required duties.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

visually differentiate between colors expressed by water quality testing kit;
frequently lift and carry pool equipment, supplies, and furniture weighing up to 50 pounds and infrequently lift or move swimmers over 100 pounds during emergencies.
