Salary and Benefits: $42,000 - $50,000. DOE to start, 20% store discount, accrued Paid Time Off, eligible for company
benefits after 90 days
Job Summary: The Produce Manager is responsible for overseeing all functions of the Produce Department including
staff management, product buying, merchandising, financial management and ensuring that all aspects of the
department’s operation are in alignment with Mariposa Food Co-op’s goals and expectations. The Produce Manager
ensures that the department continues to meet or exceed the expectations of the industry and customers alike by
making strategic changes and improvements as needed. The Produce Manager reports directly to the Cooperative
Executive Officer and is a part of Mariposa’s leadership team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Operations Management:
- Evaluates work patterns, product locations/layouts and stocking methods for efficiency, accessibility and sales impact
- Plans and implements creative and effective new ideas for which optimize sales volume, shopping ease and operational efficiency
- Works with Marketing and other departments on strategic cross-merchandising and seasonal promotions to boost sales
- Creates department staff schedule based on the business needs of the department; holds staff accountable to this schedule
- Ensure that back-stock and sales areas are kept clean, safe, organised and accessible
- Steps up for shift coverage in-store as needed
- Assist in receiving and stocking product
- Prepares for, oversees and is present for quarterly inventory
- Know and uphold organic standards, procedures, and any other applicable rules and regulations
Financial Management:
- Defines department metrics based on industry standards for department sales, margins and turns
- Develops annual budget for the department with guidance from the GM
- Uses data (sales, margin and shrink) to track departments financial performance, to evaluate current practices and to make decisions in order to meet or exceed budget
- Approaches department finances from all angles; COGs, labor (SPLH, etc.) sales, scheduling efficiency, shopping patterns, etc.
Buying Responsibilities:
- Determines retail prices, updates cashiers’ price lists and maintains cost data in POS system
- Builds and maintains relationships with local farmers and distributors; gathers flower, producer and product information for staff, customer information and merchandising purposes
- Codes and files invoices for Finance Department in a timely manner as laid out by Finance
- Uses sales data to make informed decisions when adjusting purchasing volume of product mix
- Assists in receiving and stocking products
- Increases sales by planning attractive, fully stocked and properly rotated displays
Staff Management:
- Ensures that department staff are trained thoroughly and consistently, and that they receive additional opportunities for development and training when possible
- Establishes and upholds expectations for verbal and written communications to ensure that all employees work well together
- Uses schedule and labor budget to determine when hiring is needed and works with HR Manager accordingly
- Convenes Produce Department meetings to ensure that the team stays current with industry trends and internal needs, issues and changes
- Conducts and delivers evaluations for departmental staff according to Mariposa’s company-wide systems; participates constructively in other all staff evaluations outside of Produce Department, especially those of other department leaders
- Collaborates with HR Manager as necessary to address personnel issues in a manner that is consistent with the co-op as a whole
- Proactively supports team members individually and as a group to ensure that all elements of performance are meeting expectations

Requirements
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Experience tracking and analyzing relevant data, including sales, margins and turnover
- Preferably 3 years experience effectively training and managing staff
- Exhibited ability to work well in a team setting
- Proven understanding of and ability to uphold personnel and operational policies and procedures
- Knowledge of retail natural foods, sustainable farming practices, organic farming hydroponic growing, biodynamic farming, seasonality and fair trade
- Familiarity with employment laws and fair labor practices
- Knowledge of food safety guidelines
- Ability and desire to work cooperatively with coworkers
- Exceptional customer service skills; ability to resolve escalated customer service issues
- Ability to use and independently increase knowledge with POS systems, MS Office (especially Word and Excel) and Google products
- Must be self-motivated to learn more and take on new responsibilities
- Demonstration of good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; comfortable speaking accurately in front of a group
- Ability to prioritize responsibilities and multi-task to develop and produce accurate, professional and error-free documents in a timely manner
- Strong eye for detail in quality control, invoice accuracy, product rotation and consistent pricing
- Ability to create, communicate and maintain systems involving multiple people creativity , visual awareness, spacial awareness
- Track record of being consistently reliable at meeting deadlines and being punctual
- Ability to exercise good judgment in unusual situations
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to operate various standard office equipment: photocopier, scanner, printer, laminator, computer
- Ability to climb stairs multiple times per day ability to work in cold, hot and wet environments
- Fine motor and gross motor coordination needed to safely operate a pallet jack, freight lift, u-boats, various stock carts, hand trucks and sharp tools
- Use of hands to feel textures and temperatures
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. throughout the day
- Ability to wear a mask for several hours.
