Markel is seeking a dynamic and experienced actuary to lead and manage our Professional Lines actuarial team. This team is pivotal in providing pricing and reserving support for a business unit with an annual premium base exceeding $1B. This high-visibility role is crucial within the Specialty organization, and we are looking for a trusted and valued partner for our divisional leadership team. Exceptional communication skills and extensive product knowledge of Professional Lines (e.g., D&O, E&O, Cyber) are essential for this role
Job Responsibilities
- Lead and inspire a team of actuaries responsible for reserving work and pricing analyses for Professional Lines within Markel Specialty.
- Ensure the Actuarial team is highly skilled and well-versed in the products they support.
- Support the development of innovative underwriting strategies and play a vital role in managing profitability across the portfolio.
- Foster a strong partnership with Claims leadership to ensure seamless sharing of insights across teams.
- Build close relationships with key stakeholders (Underwriting, Finance, etc.) to foster mutual understanding of how business developments impact actuarial drivers, and vice-versa.
- Stay ahead of industry trends and maintain a strong network within the actuarial profession and insurance market.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for Professional Lines within the Markel actuarial department.
- Identify areas for improvement and implement changes to enhance actuarial support to the business.
- Deliver actuarial results and insights to non-actuaries in a clear and concise manner.

The job title and base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary for the Senior Director, Head of Actuarial, Professional Lines is $128,200 - $213,600 with 55% bonus potential. The national average salary for the Director, Head of Actuarial, Professional Lines is $110,500 - $184,100 with 45% bonus potential.
