Job Summary:

Organize, supervise and evaluate the school’s co-curricular program, personnel and related facilities. A flex-time work schedule will facilitate the athletic director’s ability to act as the onsite administrator and provide visibility after school hours and at athletic functions outside of school hours.


Provide every secondary student opportunities to participate in an extracurricular activity that will extend and enrich learning including, but not limited to, fitness, health, a sense of self and competence, a knowledge and understanding lifelong physical activity, understanding the pleasure of sport, character building through healthy competition and the principles of fair play and sportsmanship.


Develop an inclusive environment for participation by all students.


Provide and supervise an intramural program for students of middle and secondary age.


This position is appointed by the Superintendent of Schools and will coordinate and work with High School and Middle School Principals on all aspects of responsibilities.


Statement of Duties:

  • Organizes and administers the overall program of interscholastic athletics for the district. Develop, organize, supervise and evaluate all phases of the athletic program (including intramurals) consistent with the schools’ and district’s Mission Statement and Philosophy and the department goals in conjunction with all MIAA rules and regulations relevant to interscholastic athletics.
  • Function as liaison among coaches, administrators, teachers, students, parents and outside agencies. Maintain regular communication with counselors and teachers regarding academic progress and the needs of student athletes.
  • Supports school-wide initiatives around the social and emotional health and well-being of students.
  • Safeguard the welfare of all student athletes. Ensure the physical examination of all athletes prior to the beginning of each season inclusive of equitable access for all students.
  • Certify academic eligibility.
  • Adhere to the district hiring process for screening all applicants for coaching positions and recommending the hiring of coaches to the principal, ensuring the coaching reflect high personal and professional standards and that they reflect the standards listed above. Provides leadership in the selection and assignment of coaches. Follow all applicable union contracts, including but not limited to, the Massachusetts Educators Association contract.
  • Supervise and evaluate coaches and provide documented coach evaluations for the personnel files to the district human resources office.
  • Supervise high school and middle school coaches and athletic event staff hired by the district.
  • Ensure that all coaches report scores efficiently and create a safe and supportive environment for ALL student-athletes.
  • Supervise and support the athletic trainer.
  • Supervise administrative office support staff member for athletic program clerical tasks.
  • Inform and collaborate with the Principal of athletic developments on a regular basis.
  • Maintains a presence within the building during the school day and assistant with various administrative duties, as directed by the principal.
  • Conduct, with administration, pre-season coach meetings to review the Athletic Handbook and Marlborough High School’s Mission Statement and relevance to athletics. Ensure Mandatory training, concussion protocol training, MIAA and district required trainings are completed prior to season start dates and update as necessary.
  • Implement orientation/information session for new students and parents. Set up meetings for parents to meet coaches before each season begins.
  • Prepare and coordinate scheduling to correspond with assignors, referees/umpires and student transportation needs.
  • Conduct regular inspections of all fields and facilities to ensure proper maintenance for safety.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the press.
  • Attend all monthly Booster Club meetings.
  • Attend meetings representing the school at League, District, State Athletic Director and MIAA meetings.
  • Create cohesive collaboration with other schools across the state and the MIAA.
  • Prepare state and federal reports as required or requested by the Principal, Superintendent and School Committee highlighting individual and team performances.
  • Prepare and monitor annual budget and expenditures and prepare reports as necessary.
  • Collect and document all income from home game ticket sales, gate receipts and bank deposits.
  • Develop a working relationship with the youth leagues to strengthen the feeder system.
  • Coordinate use of athletic facilities with the City of Marlborough Recreation Department.
  • Prepare and coordinate all athletic schedules for all seasons.
  • Aide & support in communication to parents and students about schedule for practices & games.
  • Schedule and support athletic staff in supervision of all practices.
  • Arrange for all necessary support personnel including officials, scores, timers, announcers and police to cover all events.
  • Follow proper school procedures in regards to accident forms and notification of parents/guardians and school administration and nursing staff.
  • Inventory, issue and collect all uniforms and equipment.
  • Work with coaches to schedule fall, winter and spring banquets and senior nights. Order all necessary athletic awards and communicate to parents & student athletes with lead time.
  • Perform any other duties as required.

Note: Due to administrative responsibilities, the Athletic Director will not be allowed to coach any sport.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • Coaching experience required.
  • Experience in athletic management a plus.
  • National Interscholastic Administrators (NIAA) certification or capability of obtaining one within the first two years’ of employment required.
  • School-based experience with a minimum of 2-4 years administrative and coaching experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with a state athletic association and athletic scheduling technology system a plus.
  • Strong communication skills required.
  • Experience with unified sports a plus.
  • Bilingual (Spanish or Portuguese) preferred
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
