School Counselor

OPPORTUNITY STATEMENT


Under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Educational and Counseling Services, the full-time School Counselor supports the students in grades 7-12 in their social, emotional, and academic development, with counseling responsibilities primarily in 7-9th grade. With empathy and understanding, this individual will have a strong presence in the School through direct work with students, collaboration with teachers, provision of social and emotional learning support, and partnership with families.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


An individual who demonstrates a commitment to comprehensive and integrated social and emotional programming who:

• Uses evidence-based practices and research to inform decisions and programming that support the social-emotional wellness of all students.
• Partners with Head of Health Education Department to support the Health Curriculum as needed
• Recognizes the importance of integrating social and emotional learning in all aspects of students lives at school and supports students via participation in class meetings, small groups, and one-on-one meetings as needed.
• Acts as a resource to advisors and a collaborator in the ongoing development of the Advisory Program.
  
  

A student-centered practitioner who values each students voice, experience, and history who:

• Possesses a deep understanding of adolescent development and approaches work with young people joyfully.
• Models an appreciation for student wellbeing and the connection between emotional health and intellectual wellbeing.
• Is skilled in determining appropriate next steps for a variety of situations, whether working proactively or responsively, and approaches with a restorative lens.
• Identifies the individual, classroom, and grade-wide social-emotional trends and needs of students, so as to design appropriate interventions and supports.
  
  

An individual who actively cultivates a community of belonging by:

• Building strong, intentional relationships with students, families, and Professional Community members through individual interactions, participation in divisional activities, and community events.
• Engaging regularly in work to deepen cultural competence and proficiency to better understand and serve a diverse community.
• Prioritizing continuous examination of own biases with respect to student diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  
  

A partner to students, their families, and colleagues in the social-emotional needs of students who:

• Works with the community in an understanding, confidential, and supportive manner
• Provides guidance and support to parents around adolescent development and issues related to mental health and executive functioning.
• Establishes and maintains connections with outside providers and manages individual crisis intervention.
  
  

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

• Masters or Doctoral Degree in School Counseling, School Psychology, Clinical Counseling.
• Two or more years of experience with 12-18 year-olds, preferably in a middle or high school setting.
• Commitment to DEIB/Culturally Responsive Practice.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience delivering social-emotional learning curriculum.
• Experience with restorative practices.
• Experience with Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
