Nature of Work
This is responsible full time customer service and administrative work providing assistance with the daily operations of the public library system for the Marshall County Library. Activities associated with the job include checking books and other materials in and out, re-shelving books, assisting with posting and sending overdue notices, assisting library patrons with registration requirements and processing library materials. Additional activities include assisting with the quarterly rotation of loaned materials, answering reference questions, receiving, and receipting fees, and assisting with storytelling and other activities when necessary. Employees in this classification also assist with the coordination of, specialized, educational initiatives and program such as them summer reading program, teen outreach program, etc. Job responsibilities require experience working for a public library, good organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills, ability to deal with detailed financial and program related records and good computer skills. Job performance is evaluated Library Director through review of the overall organization and operation of the Library, level of support provided for library operations and patrons, effectiveness of special programs, ability to accurately handle detailed information and interact effectively with co-workers, volunteers, and library patrons.
Illustrative Examples of Work
· Assist patrons with checking in and out of library materials.
· Creates library cards and files new library card applications; maintains patron accounts and contacts.
· Shelve books, shelf reads and maintains order and cleanliness in the book stacks.
· Informs patrons of status of overdue materials and materials requested.
· Assist and monitor OPAC, card catalog, AWE computers, and other library technology.
· Notifies patrons when requested materials become available.
· Performs reference assistance.
· Takes inter-library loan requests from patrons, assists with memorial information, and accepts donations from patrons when appropriate.
· Accepts payment for fines, memorials, lost items, book sales, etc. Shall record them legibly on the daily log sheet and give appropriate change. Responsible to balance cash box, reconciled with the daily log.
· Answers phone routinely in a clear & concise manner; announces call to Director and other staff when required.
· Maintains confidentiality of patrons and fellow staff.
· Assists patrons with computers including answering questions about computer programs, online databases, online searching, job applications, resume help and other questions about use of computers and computer programs.
· Assists patrons with printing needs; monitors computer and printer usage.
· Physical processing of new acquisitions and repair of items; notifies Assistant Director of materials in need of replacement.
· Assist with library displays, programs, and book sales.
· May be responsible for opening or closing the library building.
· Assists with various library programs or performs other duties as circumstances required or as Library Director or Assistant Director instructs.
· Interprets policy and explains procedures to the public.
· Responds to customer concerns and complaints and conducts conflict resolution.
· Performs related duties as required.
Depending on the specific opening, under the direction of the library director, this position may also be responsible for one of the following:
· Coordination of tween/teen programming and young adult collection development
· Coordination of adult and children’s collection development
· Coordination of story time and children’s programming in conjunction with assistant director
· Coordination of cataloging and processing of materials
Necessary Requirements of Work
College course work required. A two- or four-year degree is preferred. A minimum of two years’ experience working for a public library and/or bookstore; good organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills; customer service skills; experience performing basic accounting transactions and general office administrative duties; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
· Considerable knowledge of the organizational structure and mission of public libraries including available resources, services provided, outreach and educational initiatives, etc.
· Considerable knowledge of the Library Board Policies and Procedures manual including all revisions, updates, and amendments.
· Considerable knowledge of TCA laws and regulations governing library operations including copyright and privacy laws.
· Considerable knowledge of library materials processing and organization including the Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress coding systems.
· Considerable knowledge of networked computer hardware components and software applications (including internet screening devices) utilized for teaching computer skills.
· Knowledge of Tennessee State laws, regulations and standards governing public library operations.
· Ability to make appropriate and timely decisions within existing policies and procedures.
· Ability to accurately perform basic bookkeeping transactions in a consistent manner.
· Ability to remain current on new developments in library operations and apply them effectively on the job.
· Ability to prioritize personal time and activities to ensure the timely completion of all job responsibilities, meet established deadlines, etc.
· Ability to interact effectively with library patrons, local and regional officials, co-workers, community organizations and the public.
· Ability to develop and implement effective educational programs for library patrons.
· Ability to teach basic computer skills to library patrons and deliver effective story telling sessions to children.
· Skill in the use of computer hardware components and related software applications.
Physical Requirements
· This is light to medium work requiring moderate static, explosive, dynamic and trunk strength and requiring the exertion of up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
· Work requires moderate flexibility, mobility, and speed of limb movement.
· Work requires moderate effort and stamina.
· Work requires both gross body equilibrium and coordination for balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking.
· Work requires arm/ hand steadiness and manual and finger dexterity.
