NATURE OF WORK
The purpose of this position is to provide offender support to the Adult Probation Department. This is a very responsible legal, administrative, and case management position supervising adults who are placed on probation by Marshall County General Sessions Court or Lewisburg City Court. Activities associated with the job include assessing and supervising adults and fulfilling all requirements set out by their court judgement or plea. Additional responsibilities include crisis management, counseling, and providing other assistance including job placement, referrals to court ordered classes, and organizing community service work placement. Activities associated with the job require a background in caseload management, experience working with local and regional social service agencies, experience working in the court system, and strong organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills. Job performance is evaluated by the Probation Director through review of the decisions made in response to case management activities, knowledge of criminal court proceedings and resources available in the community to assist clients, ability to respond effectively to crisis situations, and organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Maintain accurate and complete case files and related documents on all probationers assigned to caseload.
· Counsel probationer for the purpose of alleviating existing and/or potential problems or destructive behaviors by encouraging
progress toward established goals.
· Supervise the activities of clients placed on probation to ensure they comply with all court orders and stipulations.
· Meet with probationer on a regular and consistent basis to ensure probation requirements are being fulfilled, administer
drug screens to ensure there is no current drug use and address any concerns or violations which require immediate attention.
· Type and sign violation warrants to be presented to the judge for his/her signature.
· Enter dispositions into the computer system with updated court dates.
· Monitor employment and program attendance.
· Monitor payment of fines, fees, court costs and restitution.
· Prepare reports and make recommendations to the judge/district attorney.
· Consult with the program director regarding questions, concerns, issues, and case direction pertaining to daily probation
matters.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Consult with social service agencies, rehabilitation centers, and mental health organizations to gather information for referrals as needed.
- Attend workshops and in-service training.
- Assist with intake duties including attending court when necessary and interviewing the newly assigned probationer.
- Adhere to County Government Policy and Procedures.
- Demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload.
- Acts as a role model within and outside the work environment.
NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS OF WORK
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in social services, Criminal Justice, Psychology or related field preferred. Criminal Justice experience and knowledge of laws pertaining to probation. Strong organizational, interpersonal and decision-making skills. A combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities:
· Knowledge of judicial proceedings
· Knowledge of misdemeanor laws
· Knowledge of treatment options available in our community and surrounding area.
· Knowledge of HIPAA regulations.
· Knowledge of drug testing procedures and protocols.
· Ability to manage a large caseload and maintain all documentation required to comply with existing departmental policies.
· Ability to interact successfully with local officials, law enforcement personnel, social service providers, clients, co-workers, and the public.
· Ability to consistently make timely and appropriate decisions in response to situations encountered on the job.
· Ability to prioritize job related activities to meet workload demands and established deadlines.
· Ability to utilize word processing, spreadsheet, and database management software applications.
· Skill in the use of conflict resolution, negotiation, and mediation techniques.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a valid Tennessee Driver’s License.
- Must pass a criminal background check prior to employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
* This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
- Work requires balancing, stooping, crouching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
- Hand and finger dexterity are required for grasping, feeling, etc.
- Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
- Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
· Incumbents are subject to inside and occasional outside environmental conditions, cold, heat, noise, and atmospheric conditions.
