ER/ICU- Registered Nurse or LPN
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Provides comprehensive intensive professional nursing care to critically ill patients in an Intensive Care or Cardiac Care Unit.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Formulates nursing care plans for critically ill patients based upon medical history and orders, nursing assessment, and knowledge of immediate and long range patient care needs.
Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, and interprets and records electronic displays regarding central venous pressures and cardiac rhythms from cardiac monitors, respirators, ventilators, manometers, oxygen pumps, infusion pumps, fetal monitors, etc.
Monitors catheters, leads and tubing (naso-gastric, endotracheal, chest, etc.) for proper placement and functioning.
Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring or life support equipment shows adverse symptomatology such as respiratory or cardiac insufficiency and abnormal arrythmias, etc.
Performs life-saving therapy as directed by a physician and, in the absence of a physician, initiates immediate life-saving measures, such as cardio pulmonary resuscitation, according to standing procedures until a physician is present or the condition ameliorates.
Administers medications as prescribed by a physician or pursuant to standing medical procedures established by the medical staff of the hospital. Such medications may be administered orally, rectally, subcutaneously, intravenously or through introduction of medications into IV fluids.
Takes samples for lab work including blood, orders prescribed lab work as appropriate and evaluates or interprets lab reports.
Assesses and evaluates the physical and emotional status of patients for indications of progress or need for referral to higher level nursing, physicians or other appropriate members of the health team.
May provide instruction and direction to other professional and paramedical personnel and students.
Assists with patient teaching and discharge planning.
Adheres to facility policies and procedures and participates in facility quality improvement and safety programs.
Performs other duties as assigned (LPNs will work alongside RNs and follow direction from them)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
One year of experience as a Registered Nurse or LPN, must be certified in CPR, must be aware and have a working knowledge of cardiac rhythms and arrhythmias. ACLS and PALS certification within one year of hire date.
A license to practice as a Registered Nurse or LPN issued by the State Board of Nursing Education and Nursing Registration.
Access continuing education opportunities appropriate to discipline and responsibilities in order to maintain clinical currency.
Registered Nurse degree or diploma from an accredited college or university.
