PURPOSE Under the general supervision of the Electrical Superintendent, Line Foreman, and Lead lineworker, performs skilled electrical work in the construction, maintenance, and operation of the City's electrical transmission and distribution system, both overhead and underground.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to: Electrical Superintendent
Receives work direction from: Line Foreman and Lead lineworker
Supervises: None
Internal Communications: Utility staff
External Communications: Customers, city departments, telecommunication utilities, Great Plains Natural Gas, electricians, Marshall businesses, Law Enforcement Agencies, and the general public
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Lineworker will:
- Participate in meetings to discuss work tasks and assignments; attend monthly safety meetings.
- Construct power lines, including setting and framing poles, stringing wire, hanging and connecting transformer banks.
- Operate a variety of specialized tools; operate over-length vehicles requiring Class A commercial driver’s license, operate large equipment including pay loader, backhoe, trencher, and pneumatic boring tool in congested areas and near energized high voltage lines.
- Install all underground utilities including high voltage, secondary fiber optic, TV, telephone, and spare conduits.
- Enter and work in confined spaces with high voltage.
- Perform tree trimming by high voltage lines and switching on distribution/transmission lines.
- Perform connects and reconnects for residential and commercial services; repair broken or worn-out electrical equipment; install 3-phase and single-phase electrical meters; assist in troubleshooting electrical problems, blinking lights, radio noise, high or low voltage.
- Maintain vehicles, tools, and other equipment; follow lock-out/tag-out procedure when needed.

• Carry out terminations; prepare high voltage cables to operate in a limited space following
listed procedures and ensure proper measurements and operation of specific tools such as crimpers,
strippers, cutters, and cleaners are followed.
• Climb poles and work from aerial devices during outages; repair failed electrical equipment
after storms; operate high voltage switches. Assist in faultfinding tasks include operating DC High
Pot Unit with voltage up to 75,000 volts DC; operate oscilloscope to locate high voltage fault;
isolate grounding and energizing high voltage cable.
• Assist in maintenance of activities on electrical system; excavate to repair electrical
conductors up to 8 feet deep; repair property and streetlights within the city.
· Work with and provide some direction to summer help in construction duties.
· Perform other related duties as assigned by Supervisor or as apparent.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
· Completion of vocational lineworker course.
· Ability to perform work requiring considerable physical effort.
· Mechanical background
· Valid MN Class A CDL
· A 20 minute on-call response time is mandatory
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
· Must possess or be working towards obtaining a valid Minnesota State journeyman license.
· Knowledge of electricity.
· Knowledge of procedures, rules and regulations of electrical industry.
· Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
· Knowledge of Arc Flash categories and responsibilities pertaining to job tasks being performed.
· Ability to read and understand maps and symbols.
· Ability to work in adverse conditions and exert moderate to considerable physical effort.
· Ability to organize, plan and carry out assignments.
· Ability to work safely as a team.
· Ability to recognize and repair problems within the system.
· Ability to perform CPR.
Machines, tools and equipment used: pay loader, backhoe, skid loader, bucket trucks, digger derrick truck, one ton trucks, 2 trenchers, air compressor with hammers, boring equipment and wire pulling equipment, elbow stick, cutout/switch sticks, shotgun stick, hydraulic crimpers, hand crimpers, pole tamps, trench tamps, fault locators (primary and secondary), voltage testers, rotation meters, phase meters, continuity testers, torque wrenchers, drills, welder, grinder, power saws, radar unit, gas torch, amp tool, concrete saw, cover up and rubber equipment, chain saws.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work involves routine exposure to irritant/fumes, hazardous chemicals, temperature extremes, vibrations and noise. Considerable physical effort is required involving many types of movement such as lifting, bending/stooping, twisting/turning, pushing/pulling, and crouching/kneeling. Large and fine motor skills are necessary as well as the full range of sense, except taste is used. Perform manual digging. Works in confined spaces. Works at heights up to 55 feet in bucket truck and 100 feet by climbing poles often times with tasks carried out overhead. Position requires weekend work, on call duty, and work beyond normal hours.

Compensation for this position ranges from $86,015 to $107,518, commensurate with experience and qualifications. MMU also offers an excellent benefit package.
