PURPOSE
Performs non-supervisory technical and skilled work to provide electrical/electronic support and communications at MMU’s substations, office building and to the Electric, Water and Metering Departments.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to: Lead Electronics Technician
Receives work direction from: Lead Electronics Technician
Internal Communications: Department managers, department supervisors, and utility staff
External Communications: MMU customers, City departments, engineers, salespeople, electricians, architects, business owners, energy consultants, vendors and manufacturers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Electronics Technician performs specialized technical tasks in the design, construction and maintenance of electronic and electrical equipment. The Electronics Technician will:
ELECTRICAL RELATED RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Collaborate with the Lead Electronics Technician in determining and recommending type, size, and voltage of metering.
- Assist the Lead Electronics Technician with maintenance and upgrades on MMU substations, metering systems, office facilities, SCADA systems, water facilities and communication systems.
- Program and interrogate meters with hand-held devices and laptop computers.
- Program, maintain and operate in-house demand control system.
- Assist the Lead Electronics Technician in maintaining a preventative maintenance program for all equipment and systems including but not limited to substations.
- Assist the Lead Electronics Technician in performing maintenance and repairs to critical substation equipment, such as circuit breakers, transformers, reclosers, load tap changers, station batteries and chargers, capacitor banks, circuit switchers, motor operators and associated equipment.
- Provide support for reliable operation and maintenance of MMU-owned generation.
- Provide technical assistance to all departments, technicians, customers, consultants, engineers and contractors pertaining to but not inclusive of MMU office and building facilities.
- Work with customers to evaluate electrical load and consumption. Operate and load data and programs on equipment related to the job.
- Troubleshoot and repair control circuits and perform repair work on power transformers and air/gas circuit breakers.
- Maintain 132-volt battery bank and metering/instrumentation.
- Design, build, program, troubleshoot, and repair control systems in a water treatment facility and at offsite well locations.
- Read electric distribution maps and locate primary and secondary underground circuit wires.
- Assist the electric and water departments with locations of MMU facilities.
- Assist in repair, troubleshooting and operation of gas turbine generator control and electric systems.
- Reads electric and water meters when requested.
- Perform disconnects and re-connects for MMU electric customers without auto-disconnect meters.
- Provide a safe work environment within assigned areas of responsibility.
- Know and follow MMU’s safety policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by Lead Electronics Technician or as apparent.
- Provide skilled craftsmanship for the maintenance and installation of technical and sensitive equipment associated with electrical distribution substations which includes a variety of technical systems.
- Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
- Installs, repairs, and maintain transformers, generators, lights, circuits, wiring, and other electrical system equipment and components in compliance with electrical codes, standards, and regulations.
- Studies plans, drawings, schematics and specifications to determine work requirement and sequence of repairs and/or installation.
- Coordinate and work alongside of electricians to ensure compliance of MMU Specifications for Conditions of Electrical Service are followed.
- Collaborate with the Lead Electronics Technician to develop and update maintenance procedures along with maintaining equipment records in the area of responsibility.
FIBER OPTIC RELATED RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design fiber infrastructure and coordinate the purchasing of materials associated with a fiber optic system.
- Assist in the layout, installation, and maintenance of underground communication circuits.
- Coordinate the installation of fiber optic systems which includes, pulling of cable, fusion splicing, testing, and record keeping.
- Maintain and troubleshoot fiber optic systems utilizing applicable test equipment.
MIMIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Combination of education and training that contributes to an adequate vocational knowledge of electronics and electrical systems.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough working knowledge of electrical practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
- Knowledge of Arc Flash categories and responsibilities pertaining to job tasks being performed.
- Thorough working knowledge of electricity (AC/DC), electronics, communication systems, computers, software, schematics and electrical drawings.
- Proven skill in operating various electrical test equipment, hand tools, electrical devices, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to multitask.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to exert moderate to physical effort when performing certain activities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· Work experience and/or basic knowledge of electricians’ work practices, procedures and code.
· Work experience and/or basic understanding of practical testing, calibration, and repairing relay devices and revenue meters.
· Work experience and/or basic understanding of fiber optic systems.
MACHINES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Multimeter, AMP Recorder, Substation Battery Tester, Oil testing equipment for transformers, Burden, Megohmmeter, Computer, Modem, Printer, and Hand Power Tools.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Extended periods of standing and sitting while performing shop, field and office work. Uses a variety of physical movements such as bending/stooping, crouching/kneeling, pushing/pulling and lifting to various levels. Some work will be performed in confined spaces. Exposure to spray paint fumes, temperature extremes, noise and live electricity. Occasionally performs digging to locate wire faults. Uses most senses (excluding taste) including different types of vision. May work up to 18 feet using ladder and may occasionally work up to 40 feet in a bucket truck and 160 feet in a water tower.

Compensation for this position ranges from $82,888 to $103,610, commensurate with experience and qualifications. MMU also offers an excellent benefit package.
