The Carpenter performs skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, repair and alteration of building structures and facilities following recognized procedures and techniques of the carpentry trade. The Carpenter practices preventive maintenance of carpentry tools and equipment, and complies with federal regulations governing safety, environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials common to construction. Performs work/repairs in accordance to work orders or verbal instructions.

The Carpenter performs skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, repair and alteration of building structures and facilities following recognized procedures and techniques of the carpentry trade. The Carpenter practices preventive maintenance of carpentry tools and equipment, and complies with federal regulations governing safety, environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials common to construction. Performs work/repairs in accordance to work orders or verbal instructions.
General Duties:
- Uses hand, pneumatic, and power tools to perform skilled carpentry work.
- Performs construction of new walls, hangs sheetrock and doors, installs hardware, ceiling grids, ceiling tile, tile floors, carpet and base mold, finish, and trim.
- Installs glass in windows, doors, and partitions.
- Inspects, repairs, and cleans roofs, roof drains, downspouts, and gutters.
- Assembly and installation of furniture/items including following manufacturer’s directions to ensure proper setup and installation.
- Preforms basic concrete work.
- Operates table saws, radial arm saws, routers, planners, sanders, and special trim fabricating tools, air compressors, jackhammers, backhoes, ditch witch, man lifts, ladders, chainsaws, and other tools and equipment related to the carpentry trade.
- Fabrication of custom cabinetry including: wall cabinets, base cabinets, shelves, bookcases, mailboxes, computer stations, podiums, shadow boxes, desks.
- Provides access through walls, floors, and other structures as may be required by dismantling or cutting through structural and other physical barriers to gain access for repairs or new installations.
- Complies with policies, laws, and regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal, and the use of chemical substances and materials common to carpentry work.
- Restores assigned work sites to their original condition at the completion of work by removing tools, materials, and debris, drop cloths, and tarpaulins used during the project, returning furniture and equipment to their proper location, setting up equipment that had been dismantled, and coordinating the cleaning, painting, or replacing tile(s) and other structural effects through which holes have been cut.
- Maintains knowledge of state, federal, and local codes and requirements that apply to the carpentry trade.
- Interprets schematic drawings, blueprints, OM manuals, and vendor literature.
- Answers trouble calls when dispatched during workday, to ensure efficient day to day operation of the university.
- General campus maintenance including installation of new pencil sharpeners, chalkboards/white boards, inspecting and fixing chairs and desks.
- Required overtime for athletic events, student activities, and emergency call out situations.
- Completes truck and shop inventories as assigned.
- Cleans and organizes storage and equipment rooms.
- Repairs, cleans, and maintains shop equipment, tools, and vehicles.
- Maintains an organized work area, which includes cleanliness, safety and security of materials.
