The Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Lead performs skilled technical work, and assist the HVAC Manager in day to day supervision the HVAC Technicians, PM General Maintenance Workers, and other assigned personnel in installing, maintaining, modifying, repairing, and removal of HVAC systems, devices, and related controls. Assists in the design and implementation of preventive maintenance plans, and the deferred maintenance schedule. Troubleshoots problems using hand and power tools and precision measuring and testing devices to make adjustments or repairs in accordance to work orders or verbal instructions.

Required Certifications:
- Valid Driver’s License
- Universal EPA Certification
- West Virginia HVAC Technician License
- Functions as a team leader, providing guidance to HVAC Technicians, PM Shop General Maintenance Workers, trades workers, and any other support personnel as required.
- Provides continuity of supervision and leadership by assuming the duties and responsibilities of the shop manager in their absence.
- Follows procedures and makes work assignments to those individuals assigned to the crew to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion ensuring proper quality and quantity.
- Inspects completed work assignments of HVAC Technicians, trades workers, and helpers to ensure quality control.
- Ensures that proper safety procedures are followed by employees while performing job duties.
- Explains work Requirements, methods, and procedures; instructs subordinate in new procedures and provides direction when problems arise.
- Supervises the full scope and range of work involved in the installation, inspection and repair of new and existing HVAC systems at university owned properties.
- Receives work orders. Interfaces with Supervisors, Managers, and requesting party to finalize projects needs and scope. Finalizes work orders when required.
- Assists Manager with multi-craft projects related to overall work assignments.
- Communicates work schedules and goals to employees and customer, creating efficiency and a timely completion of assigned tasks.
- Provides continual inspection of assigned projects to ensure maintenance is completed on schedule.
- Assists Supervisor in updating deferred maintenance.
- Reads, reviews, and develops prints or diagrams on new and existing building projects for repair or construction and cost estimates.
- Maintain knowledge of state, federal, and local codes and requirements pertaining to maintenance and construction. Ensures these codes are maintained by employees.
- Attend project meetings and interact with contractors, vendors, and engineers as needed.
- Informs Manager of performance problems that may cause the projects to exceed projected time frames or cost.
- Ensures that the assigned personnel process all work requests, material requisitions, weekly reports, and invoices necessary to complete assignments according the Physical Plant operations.
- Works along with Manager in employee disciplinary action.
- Maintains an organized work area, which includes cleanliness, safety and security of materials.
- Reviews new materials for cost saving measures.
- Works with supervisor on assignments for labor and material expectations.
- Troubleshoots and repairs HVAC equipment, to ensure efficient day to day operation of the University.
- Provides the full scope and range of work involved in the installation, inspection and repair of new and existing HVAC systems at university owned properties.
- Repairs, installs, and troubleshoots all HVAC control systems.
- Inspects and tests both high- and low-pressure refrigerant systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions.
- Performs seasonal overhauls in transition of systems from heating to cooling and vice versa.
- Performs HVAC system inspections and manufacturer-recommended preventive maintenance.
- Inspects and tests HVAC systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions, performs required repairs.
- Provides means of access through walls, floors, and other structures as may be required by dismantling or cutting through structural and other physical barriers in order to gain access for repairs or for new installations.
- Restores assigned work sites to their original condition at the completion of work by removing tools, materials, and debris, drop cloths, and tarpaulins used during the project, returning furniture and equipment to their proper location, setting up equipment that had been dismantled, and coordinating the cleaning, painting, or replacing tile(s) and other structural effects through which holes have been cut.
- Operates multimeters, voltmeters, ampmeters, powermeters, electric tracking equipment, frequency counters, AC and DC power supplies.
- Operates power tools, hand tools, air compressors, jackhammers, backhoes, oxygen-acetylene torches, soldering and desoldering equipment. man lifts, and manifold gauges
- Reads and interprets schematics, blueprints, and manufacturers specifications.
- Troubleshoots and repairs control devices and wiring within the HVAC primary system, and maintaining, repairing, modifying secondary refrigerant systems including pumps, valves, cooling, air moving equipment and local temperature/pressure controls.
- Insulate pipes and ductwork as needed and other weatherization needs.
- Maintain, service, repair, replace stem traps and other steam related equipment.
- Completes truck and shop inventories as assigned.
- Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
- Complies with federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal, and the use of refrigerants, chemical substances and materials.
