Counselor in Residence Graduate Assistantship Description
The Counselor-In-Residence (CIR) position is a cooperative effort between Housing and Residence Life, Counseling Center, and the Psychology Department. This position is administered jointly by the Psychology Department and Counseling Services.
The CIR position will be offered to doctoral students with the appropriate level of training and clinical experience. The successful candidate will reside in the residence halls and will provide consultation, brief intervention, programmatic, and emergency services to residents and staff. The CIR works as an extension of the counseling center in a team effort with housing and counseling center staff to meet the mental health needs of students who live in the residence halls. The CIR will also seek to facilitate wellness in the residence halls.

Duties
  • Hold up to 20 evening and weekend office hours to accommodate student or student staff drop in needs. 12 of the hours will be held in the evenings after the Counseling center has closed, at least 6 will be held during regular University business hours
  • The CIR will be responsible for program development, crisis intervention, consultation, brief intervention and administrative duties.
  • The CIR position is a one year placement with the ability to renew for an additional maximum of two years, pending a successful evaluation and reapplication process.
Weekly Outreach
  • Develop and facilitate training for housing student staff at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. Topics may include but are not limited to communication, crisis intervention, self-care and team building.
  • Present programs each semester in the residence halls. Topics may reflect CIR’s professional interests or meet the requests of housing staff. Possible topics could include communication skills, relaxation techniques, and time management.
  • Connect with other offices to educate Marshall community about the CIR services
  • Visit classes or attend established programs to assist with CIR visibility and education of CIR services.
Crisis Intervention
  • Provide brief intervention, consultation, and support to residents and housing student staff during emergency and crisis situations if needed
  • Consult with on call staff at the Counseling Center, and facilitate an effective and expedient response to the emergency in a collaborative effort with the housing staff, the counseling staff and MUPD (when applicable).
Consultation and Brief Intervention
  • Establish and maintain high visibility in residence halls (e.g., introduce yourself during opening, attend hall council meetings, place flyers up in the halls advertising your office hours etc.) to facilitate referrals, consultations and brief intervention contacts.
  • Provide consultation services to housing staff regarding communication with residents, group dynamics, and other topics as requested.
  • Provide brief intervention services to students living in the halls in your designated office space. Brief Intervention should not take place in the CIR’s or resident’s personal living space
  • Facilitate the referral of students living in the halls to the Counseling Center for ongoing counseling.

Administration
  • Meet with in hall residence life staff members to establish and maintain effective working relationships at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.
  • Meet with each Area Coordinator and Assistant Area Coordinator at least once a semester.
  • Maintain weekly records of the number and type of interactions with residents and housing student staff. Keep the counseling center informed of these records through Titanium system.
  • Maintain weekly records of responses to crisis situations in the residence halls. Keep the counseling center informed of these records through Titanium system.
  • Submit weekly recaps to representatives of Housing, the Counseling Center, and the Psychology Department on the amount of clients seen, buildings they were from, common themes from clients, outreach involved in that week, questions comments or concerns to be discussed.
  • Write a report at the end of each semester that summarizes the CIR’s experience during the semester. Submit the report to representatives of Housing, the Counseling Center, and the Psychology Department.
Supervision and Training
  • Orientation and training for the CIRs will be provided jointly by the Housing and Residence Life, the Counseling Center, and the Psychology Department.
  • The CIRs will meet weekly for 1 hour of supervision with the CIR Advisory team.
  • Crisis-on-call situations will be supervised by the on call counselor for the Counseling Center
Benefits
  • The CIR will be provided with a partial tuition waiver (this does not include fees) provided by the Graduate College to cover the cost of tuition.
  • The CIR will be provided with a one-bedroom apartment in one of the residence halls. The apartment is fully furnished and utilities are included. Spouses, significant others, and dependents are welcome, however must submit to a background check. A Housing Live-On Agreement will be provided upon hiring and the CIR will need to agree to the terms listed.
  • The CIR will be provided with an office space in a residence hall to provide brief intervention services.
  • The CIR’s semester stipend of $3000 will be paid biweekly following the University’s pay schedule.
  • There are no fringe benefits such as vacation or sick leave. In the event that the CIR expects to be unavailable for a period of time or for their office hours the CIR is responsible for obtaining the approval from the Housing supervisor in advance. Once approved the CIR should post signs on their office door to alert those who may be seeking their assistance.
