The Professional Internship Coordinator will manage the day-to-day business of the HerdWork program, which places majors in humanities disciplines into paid internships with area nonprofit organizations. The position will be initially funded by the Mellon Foundation and subsequently self-sustaining with support from the Office of the President, the College of Liberal Arts, and the Marshall Foundation. The Coordinator will work closely with the Faculty Program Director (a tenured faculty member in a humanities discipline) to develop the HerdWork program in a way that advances the goals of our university-wide strategic plan, “Marshall for All, Marshall Forever.”The Coordinator, in consultation and collaboration with the Faculty Program Director and the HerdWork committee, will design and deliver the curriculum associated with internship placements, including developing workshop content about mentoring for faculty and community internship mentors. The Coordinator will work with the Faculty Director to facilitate student placement at internship sites, initiate and curate relationships with community partners, and conduct and coordinate assessment of the HerdWork program at all levels. The Coordinator will also collaborate with humanities programs to recruit faculty and students to participate in the program and will refine program protocols for recruitment, placement, and assessment of students. The Coordinator will engage proactively with the Faculty Director, co-PIs, graduate and undergraduate assistants, faculty and community internship mentors, staff members in the Office of Career Education, the HerdWork committee, and other stakeholders as needed.Duties Include:· Developing content related to the value of humanities as they intersect with career readiness and professional development. This content will be incorporated into a new 1-credit-hour online course, “HerdWork 101,” that all students who participate in the HerdWork program must take.· Standardizing the expectations for department-specific internship courses.· Creating and facilitating workshops for faculty members who will serve as faculty internship mentors. These workshops will explain the value of humanities-based skills in the current work environment and inform faculty about best practices for mentoring student interns.· Engaging with current and prospective nonprofit organizations in the region to identify their needs and promote HerdWork.· Identifying individuals within our partnering nonprofit organizations who will serve as nonprofit mentors and facilitating workshops that explain the value of humanities-based skills in the current work environment and inform our nonprofit partners about best practices for mentoring student interns.· Promoting and hosting a HerdWork Networking Event so that prospective HerdWork student interns and regional nonprofit leaders can interact.· Placing approximately 30 humanities majors in paid internships during the first year of the program (drawing largely on the relationships we already have established with area organizations) with a goal of placing 75 humanities majors in paid internships for each subsequent academic year.· Conducting pre/post assessment with students, faculty mentors, nonprofit mentors, and nonprofit leaders to evaluate HerdWork.· Promoting and hosting an annual HerdWork Showcase at which the accomplishments of student interns can be highlighted.· Organizing guest speakers and HerdWork events.· Performing professional program administrative duties, including technical decisions and using best practices to achieve mutually agreeable outcomes in the resolution of issues.· Traveling and presenting research and/or program best practices when needed to community partners, as well as at regional and national conferences.This position will start July 01, 2025Please contact the search committee chair, Dr. Rich Jones, at JonesRI@marshall.edu with any questions.
