Job Description
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor's degree in Information systems, Computer Science Mathematics, Engineering or related field and a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience, and industry certification in Cisco CCNA desired. Experience in telecommunications theory and systems including hardware and software protocols. Mastery of multiplexing, cross connect systems technology and practices. Must understand SONET principles including provisioning and network management tools. Significant experience with at least one major supplier of SONET equipment is required. Must have experience in writing reports and procedural manuals along with presenting information to managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Excellent communications skills required, along with experience with report generation applications, VISIO, AutoCAD and specialized monitoring and configuration applications. Directly related experience may substitute for a degree on a year-for-year basis.
INTERVIEW SELECTION PROCESS: The selection process may include one or more components to demonstrate applicants’ knowledge, skills and abilities in job related areas. These may include exercises such as practical demonstrations, written communications, oral interviews and/or competency assessments.
Summary
Serves as the network engineer for the Authority on the implementation, maintenance and support of enterprise class fiber optic networking equipment, including SONET, DWDM, CWDM and managed Wavelengths. Responsible for ensuring the highest level of availability for all communications services provided over the network. Must be have experience with configuring and maintaining a variety of enterprise class optical networking components. Provides second level production support for the enterprise WAN/LAN environments. Designs, Plans, implements, and proactively monitors optical equipment to support existing and new applications, which includes security performance monitoring, configuration management and issue escalation and resolution. Responsible for managing multi-vendor software systems by using system documentations skills project management skills and strong verbal and written communication skills.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Serves as primary network engineer and administrator for all optical networking components in an integrated LAN/WAN environment. Provides guidance and direction to others and resolves the most complex technical networking problems, with a focus on efficiency and security.
- Actively participates in the design, development and implementation of highly complex and highly-available optical LAN/WAN Systems in accordance with the Authority's goals and objectives.
- Works with contractors, vendors and other internal departments on projects that have a network infrastructure component.
- Implements and maintains network security products and configurations and makes recommendations to ensure the network infrastructure has solid security architecture in place.
- Recommends enhancements to existing optical and Ethernet networking systems and infrastructure.
- Provides 2/3 tier production support.
- Provides after hours production support on a rotational basis.
- Configures, maintains and upgrades optical and Ethernet networking components.
- Racks, wires and mounts all networking components as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
