SUBSTITUE SCHOOL NURSE
Position Purpose
Provides health care to students who require basic first aid, administers medication, and performs medical procedures and tasks as indicated and as ordered by health care providers. Evaluates ill or injured students and staff and notifies emergency personnel when necessary. Documents health concerns and daily health office visits in the student information system. Collaborates with staff and AEA for individualized plans for students.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
- Takes vital signs, provides basic aid and tests the vision health of students as needed.
- Coordinates health service programs.
- Provides health education as needed.
- Promotes a healthy school and home environment by identifying health and safety concerns, supporting healthy food service programs, and promoting policies and practices that support physical activity in students.
- Provides skilled nursing care for students with special needs.
- Offers health counseling as needed.
- Assesses the mental health needs of students and provides intervention and referrals to appropriate school staff or community agency.
- Works with the Iowa Department of Public Health as needed to prevent the spread of contagious diseases inside the school.
- Educates students and parents about epidemics that could affect students.
- Involved in the development and implementation of IEPs and 504 plans for students.

Qualifications Profile

Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Graduate of a 3-year nursing program and is licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN); or

Graduate of a 4-year baccalaureate program in nursing (BSN), and is licensed as a registered nurse

Statement of Professional Recognition (SPR) from the Board of Educational Examiners (or ability/willingness to obtain) preferred

Licensure

Licensed by the Iowa Board of Nursing

CPR and First Aid certifications preferred

Experience

Previous experience in healthcare working with school-age children, previous experience as a school nurse, or a combination thereof

Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Physical Requirements
Physical requirements vary by individual job assignment but requires a minimum of the following physical requirements: Walking, standing, bending, carrying, climbing, lifting minimum of 40 pounds, driving, pushing, pulling, reaching, sitting, and stooping.
Working Conditions
Includes extremes of temperature and humidity. Hazards include stairs and communicable diseases.
Any employee not covered by a negotiated contract agreement is an “at-will” employee. Either the school district or the employee can terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause, so long as there is no violation of applicable federal or state law. The school district can define the number of days notice required of a terminating employee.
