Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, I will supervise and monitor the Nursing Department, on an assigned shift in accordance with current Federal, State and local standards, guidelines and regulations; When I see a deficient practice or violation of our code of conduct, I am responsible for immediate education and mentoring, and ongoing safety monitoring.
Essential Functions
Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, I will supervise and monitor the Nursing Department, on an assigned shift in accordance with current Federal, State and local standards, guidelines and regulations; When I see a deficient practice or violation of our code of conduct, I am responsible for immediate education and mentoring, and ongoing safety monitoring.
Essential Functions
- I supervise and monitor the nursing activities when on duty.
- I ensure units are adequately staffed, by utilizing all available resources per contractual agreements and criteria.
- I evaluate units for acuity and activity and assures appropriate assignments of staff, while keeping the Unit Concept, consistent assignment and teamwork in mind.
- I report staffing issues and problems to the Director of Nursing/designee and/or Staffing Manager/designee.
- I make rounds, throughout the facility, with special focus to the Nursing Department and Resident Dining Rooms, to ensure Safety, Security, and Employee Engagement.
- I initiate, in writing, any required disciplinary action with employees, based on any violations of the Code of Conduct and communicates with the Unit Manager, Assistant Director of Nursing, or Director of Nursing as necessary.
- I ensure that the nursing units are maintained in a clean and safe manner ensuring that established isolation techniques, infection control and safety procedures are followed.
- I provide emergency services on units when necessary.
- I ensure notification of the attending physician, as well as the legal guardian when a resident becomes critically ill or injured.
- I collaborate with the Unit Manager for follow through and feedback on their related shift, disciplinary action, incident report investigation and/or documentation, staff evaluations and other related issues.
- I attend and participate in meetings, workshops and seminars, and share information learned with others.
- I provide education to all personnel on assigned shift, as appropriate.
- I implement safety review and drills on the shift assigned.
- I recommend equipment, supplies and medication as needed, according to policy and notify Unit Managers and Director of Nursing of needs and/or problems.
- I provide for resident and family education classes as needed.
- I must be comfortable with electronic medical records.
- I ensure that all required documentation is appropriately maintained, throughout each shift.
- I perform other duties as needed or assigned.
- I have an LPN or RN Degree from an accredited Nursing program
- If I am licensed by the Michigan Board of Nursing or hold a NHA License, I must maintain licensure as required by state law
- Some supervisory experience is preferred.
- I have thorough knowledge of nursing principles, methods and practices; I have familiarity with a Long - Term Care organization and its functions, policies, regulations and procedures.
- I am able to organize work programs and skilled in identifying problems and planning a solution.
- I possess the ability to supervise, direct and organize the work of others.
- I have effective written and oral communications skills.
- I am able to maintain the confidentiality of resident care.
- I am able to communicate with tact and courtesy.
